Inside the Cabo San Lucas Marina

Inside the Cabo San Lucas Marina, everything makes sense. The restaurants, the nightlife, the real estate, the sport fishing fleet, it all orbits this water. But in 1970, none of it existed. There was no harbor, no highway, and no marina. Just a dusty landing strip and a tuna cannery at the tip of the peninsula.

How It Was Built

In 1974, FONATUR, the federal agency that also developed Cancún, made a decision that changed the entire trajectory of Los Cabos. They dredged a dry mudflat, buried the landing strip, and created a sheltered harbor where nothing had existed before. The goal was straightforward: turn a remote fishing village into a destination the world would come to.

It worked. Today the marina holds 380 slips and hosts everything from 30-foot pangas to 375-foot megayachts.

Mexico’s Only 5 Gold Anchor Marina

(IGY) Island Global Yachting, manages the facility, and it holds the only 5 Gold Anchor rating in Mexico. That designation reflects both the quality of infrastructure and the level of service on the docks. It is not a casual marina. It operates at near-perpetual capacity, particularly from November through April, and transient slip reservations should be made at least six months in advance.

Rates reflect the demand. A 60-foot sportfisher runs several hundred dollars per night during peak season. Long-term annual contracts rarely become available.

What Most People Don’t Know

The marina sits tucked directly behind the Pedregal headland, and that is not an accident. The headland acts as a natural breakwater, shielding the entire basin from Pacific swells. Without that geography, none of this would work.

For those who want to feel the original rhythm of Cabo, the malecon at 5:30 in the morning is the place to be. A hundred diesel engines firing up at once has been the soundtrack of this town for fifty years. Inside the Cabo San Lucas Marina, that sound is still the most authentic thing here.

Practical Notes

The maximum draft is 29 feet, deep-keeled vessels should verify conditions near the entrance during extreme low tides. During the Bisbee’s Black and Blue tournament in October, the basin reaches gridlock. If you are not participating, avoid bringing a vessel in during that window.

Water taxis running from the marina to Médano Beach and the Arch remain one of the best and most overlooked ways to move around Cabo. Faster than a land cab, cheaper, and the views of the IGY megayacht docks are worth it alone.

Marina Real Estate

Owning property at the marina means living at the center of everything Los Cabos offers. The water in front of you, the corridor behind you, and one of the most recognized harbors in the world as your address.
