The Night Bobby Walked Into Cabo Wabo
The Night Bobby Walked Into Cabo Wabo

The night Bobby walked into Cabo Wabo is a story you can’t manufacture. You walk in for a margarita and leave two hours later with ringing ears. That’s the secret of Cabo. You can’t schedule the magic. You just show up and stay loose.
Sammy Hagar and the Cantina That Started It All
Sammy Hagar turned Cabo San Lucas into a rock mecca decades ago. He opened Cabo Wabo Cantina and made it the heart of the town’s nightlife. The place has a gravity that’s hard to explain until you’ve stood inside it. Humid air, low light, and the sense that anything could happen.
And on January 6, 2017, something did.
When Two Worlds Collided
Bob Weir, founding member of the Grateful Dead, walked onto that stage alongside Sammy. On paper, the pairing shouldn’t work. The Grateful Dead’s spacious psychedelia on one side, Sammy’s Sunset Strip roar on the other. Inside the Cantina, it was pure liquid gold.
They played an eleven-minute version of “Mas Tequila,” complete with stories about ninjas. They also played the Grateful Dead classic “Loose Lucy.” The whole set was filmed for Sammy’s show, Rock and Roll Road Trip. No camera fully captured what the room felt like that night.
The Birthday Bashes That Became Legend
Weir returned for Sammy’s 70th Birthday Bash in October 2017. That night was captured in the concert film Red ‘Til I’m Dead. Legends like Toby Keith and Eddie Money were also on that stage. These weren’t planned spectacles. They were the natural result of two musicians who loved each other’s company.
The Cabo Wabo Birthday Bashes became the event on the Los Cabos calendar because of nights like these.
A Closing Chapter
Bob Weir passed away on January 10, 2026, at 78 years old. With him went one of the most genuine friendships in rock history. Their final shared performances at the Sphere in Las Vegas were in 2024 and 2025. Those shows now stand as the closing chapter of something that began on a small Cabo stage.
The walls of Cabo Wabo remember all of it.
