San José del Cabo history stretches back nearly three centuries, and most people do not know the half of it. Ask someone about the name and they assume the “del Cabo” part was added recently for a tourism brochure. However, the truth is far more interesting than that.
A Name That Told the Whole Story
On April 8, 1730, Jesuit missionary Nicolás Tamaral founded the local mission. He did not simply name it San José. Instead, he officially christened it Misión Estero de las Palmas de San José del Cabo Añuití.
That name carried an entire world inside it. The estero referred to the freshwater estuary on the edge of town. Las Palmas described the native palm trees surrounding it. Del Cabo placed it geographically at the cape. Furthermore, Añuití preserved the original Pericú indigenous name for the area. In other words, Tamaral built a complete portrait of the land directly into the mission’s name.
From Mission to Municipal Seat
The mission formally transitioned into a secular town in 1830. Subsequently, San José del Cabo became the municipal seat of Los Cabos in 1980. However, that original colonial identity never washed away. The name stayed, and so did the soul behind it.
