Da Giorgio Cabo was not just a restaurant. It was a love story between a Florentine gentleman and a woman whose family had already written some of the most important chapters in Baja California history. Together, Giorgio Battaglia and Cristina Bremer Rodríguez created something that nobody who experienced it has ever fully forgotten.
Who Founded Da Giorgio and What Was the Story Behind It?
Giorgio Battaglia was a charismatic man from Florence. Cristina carried extraordinary regional history in her blood, coming from the family behind Rancho Las Cruces in La Paz, the iconic Hotel Palmilla built in 1956, and the emblematic Hacienda Hotel on Médano Beach. The two fell deeply in love in Florence, and by 1991 their vision took physical form with the opening of Ristorante Da Giorgio in Cabo San Lucas.
What Made the Cabo San Lucas Location So Special?
They secured a dramatic canyon-edge location in Misiones del Cabo with enormous wood-burning ovens, handmade stone details, and water features woven directly through the dining areas. It was sophisticated but deeply relaxed, the kind of place where you watched the sunset over Land’s End with a bottle of Chianti and fresh handmade pasta in front of you.
Today that legendary cliffside spot lives on as Sunset Monalisa. Furthermore, although it has passed through new ownership, the vision Giorgio and Cristina built into those stone terraces remains palpable.
What Was the San José del Cabo Location Like?
Riding the success of the original, they expanded along the Corridor to open Trattoria Da Giorgio just outside of San José del Cabo. Located on a hilltop on the mountain side of the highway near Palmilla, the atmosphere was completely different but equally enchanting.
Guests drove up a private gated road lined with trees wrapped in white lights. The restaurant itself was a beautiful Mediterranean-style villa with sweeping views of Palmilla Bay and the San José coastline. If the Cabo location was about dramatic waves and sunsets, the San José location was about quiet romance, soft light, and wide open bay views.
The menu leaned slightly more formal. Impeccable spinach ravioli stuffed with ricotta, fresh bread baked in wood-fired ovens, and local catches prepared simply with extra virgin olive oil and white wine. It became the definitive impression restaurant on that side of the corridor.
Why Did Da Giorgio Close?
The partnership came to a heartbreaking end when Giorgio tragically passed away. Devastated by the loss of her husband and co-founder, Cristina eventually made the decision to step away from the restaurant business entirely. Without Giorgio’s Florentine presence and Cristina’s guidance, the original Da Giorgio era gradually came to a close. The San José location shut its doors permanently, leaving behind memories of moonlit dinners on the Palmilla hillside.
