How Cabo Wabo Got Its Name
Cabo Wabo history does not start with a business plan or a celebrity vanity project. It starts with a diaper run. Jorge Viaña was working the front desk at the Twin Dolphin when a guest named Sammy Hagar showed up with a very specific emergency. He needed disposable diapers, and he needed them fast.
Jorge did not blink. He loaded Sammy into a car and canvassed every small shop in town until they tracked the diapers down. Furthermore, what started as an errand turned into a marathon conversation and the foundation of a friendship built entirely on Jorge’s quiet, relentless work ethic.
Who Was Jorge Viaña?
That was Jorge all over. Head down, more listening than talking, always giving you his best. He never positioned himself. He never self-promoted. Consequently, it was not until much later, through an entirely different conversation, that Sammy learned Jorge had his own Rolling Stones story tucked away: front-row access to the Cabo scene when Keith Richards got married here. Jorge never once brought it up himself.
He is the same man who would eventually become known as the Mayor of Cabo Wabo, the person who found the only piano in town and had it hauled across the dunes to Alfonso’s on Médano Beach so Keith and Mick could play a private set under the Baja stars. The kind of operator who makes impossible things happen without ever asking for credit.
How Did Cabo Wabo Get Its Name?
As the friendship between Jorge and Sammy grew, the two started building an idea that Cabo was clearly missing: a real rock and roll bar. One night, standing outside trying to land on a name, Sammy spotted a tourist weaving unsteadily down the street. Jorge glanced over and dryly called it. The guy was doing the Cabo Wobble. Sammy loved the sound of it immediately, and right there on the sidewalk, Cabo Wabo got its name.
What Did Cabo Wabo Become?
What followed is now part of the permanent soundtrack of Cabo San Lucas. Sammy Hagar opened Cabo Wabo Cantina and built it into one of the most recognized rock bars in the world, eventually spinning off the Cabo Wabo Tequila brand that he later sold for an amount that made international business news. Moreover, the bar became the anchor of downtown nightlife and one of the most reliably packed venues on the peninsula.
None of it happens without Jorge Viaña finding diapers in a small Baja town on a moment’s notice.

Jorge’s story is the most Cabo story there is. The best things that happened in this town did not happen because someone had a plan. They happened because someone showed up, did the work without asking for recognition, and let the relationship build from there.
Additionally, it is a reminder that the real history of Los Cabos has always lived in the people behind the scenes, not just the names on the signs.
