What Happens to Gigglin Marlin After the Fire
The Gigglin Marlin Cabo lot on Boulevard Marina is under contract. The debris is gone, the parcel is cleared, and according to the listing agent, future plans have not been determined. Whether the new owners revive the name or build something entirely different, the question is now a matter of time.
What Was the Gigglin Marlin and Why Did It Matter?
Gary Wagner, known around town as Goyo, opened the Gigglin Marlin in 1984, well before the beach clubs and resort towers arrived. By the bar’s own account, it was at one point the only bar in downtown Cabo San Lucas. Consequently, every downtown nightlife venue operating at full volume today is working from a template the Marlin set more than forty years ago.
Most visitors knew it for one thing: being hoisted upside down by the ankles on the fish scale, next to a grinning marlin, for a photo. However, the rest of the story runs deeper than that.
What Made the Gigglin Marlin Unique?
The house motto said everything about what the place was: if our food, drinks, and service are not up to your standards, please lower your standards. It was posted where every customer could read it. The beer was cold, the food did its job, and nobody walked in expecting ceremony.
The signature drink was the Skip and Go Naked: gin, lemonade, and a top of beer. It went down easily and caught up fast. Furthermore, finish four in one evening and the staff painted your name on the wall.
The bar also survived an earlier fire years before the 2024 blaze. Local lore holds that a patron fired a flare gun into the thatched roof one night, and that the incident contributed to the founding of Cabo’s volunteer fire department. The Bomberos actually predate the Marlin by two years, so the story has likely grown in the telling. Nevertheless, it remains part of how the town remembers its early days.
What Happened to the Gigglin Marlin in 2024?
The bar burned in the early hours of June 15, 2024, and was a total loss. By fall of 2025, a Se Vende banner hung on the fence. The lot sat empty while locals and longtime visitors asked what would replace one of downtown Cabo’s original gathering places.
As of October 2026, the parcel is under contract. The listing agent confirmed that future plans have not been determined.
What Should Replace the Gigglin Marlin?
Goyo did not build the Marlin with focus groups or a branding deck. He built it on cold drinks, belly laughs, and no ego, back when Cabo was still a dusty fishing town. Moreover, the memories that attached to that address run deep in this community.
Walking past the empty lot is strange for everyone who spent a first Cabo night under that palapa. Whether the new owners nod to that history or go a completely different direction, the dirt on that corner has earned some soul.
KT, Your Insider Guide
I will keep an ear to the ground as the sale closes and plans surface. Additionally, for anyone watching downtown Cabo San Lucas real estate, this parcel on Boulevard Marina is one of the most symbolically loaded addresses that has changed hands in years.
Whatever goes there next will carry the weight of what stood there before, whether the new owners acknowledge it or not.
