Flying Private to Los Cabos: CSL vs SJD
For private and charter travelers, Los Cabos offers a choice most visitors never think to make: which airport actually gets you to your property faster. Cabo San Lucas International Airport (CSL) and Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) sit at opposite ends of the region. The right call depends entirely on where you are staying, not on which airport sounds more familiar.
Which Los Cabos Airport Is Closer to Cabo San Lucas?
CSL sits just 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas. That makes it the clear choice for anyone staying in town, in Pedregal, or along the Marina. It is a privately operated field with a dedicated FBO, general aviation traffic, and none of SJD’s commercial volume. For clients who value speed and discretion over scale, that is a meaningful advantage.
CSL also serves the Pacific side of the corridor well. Diamante, Quivira, and Cabo del Sol are all closer to CSL than to SJD. Cabo del Sol in particular runs about 15 minutes from CSL versus roughly 30 to SJD. As the Pacific side continues to build out, moreover, CSL’s proximity will only become more valuable.
Which Los Cabos Airport Is Better for the Corridor and San José?
SJD is the better landing point for anything toward the San José end of the corridor. The toll road cuts meaningfully into drive times for Chileno Bay, Eldorado, Querencia, Twin Dolphin, and Costa Palmas. For communities positioned east along the corridor, SJD’s head start outweighs CSL’s smaller-airport advantages.
SJD is also the larger operation by design. It offers bigger runway infrastructure, an expanding private aviation FBO, and more scale if a trip needs a commercial contingency, whether that means a crew change, a weather diversion, or additional passengers joining via commercial connection.
What Commercial Options Exist at CSL?
CSL is not purely a private-aviation field. Two commercial-adjacent operators fly scheduled service out of it. Señor Air connects CSL to regional mainland destinations including Mazatlán, Los Mochis, Puerto Vallarta, Chihuahua, and Hermosillo. Schedules rotate weekly rather than running a fixed daily grid, so confirm current frequency directly with the airline before booking. In addition, JSX offers semi-private charter service from CSL with a private-terminal experience and Embraer jets, serving Dallas Love Field year-round and Los Angeles seasonally.
How Much Private Aviation Traffic Does Los Cabos Handle?
Combined across CSL and SJD, Los Cabos handles roughly 15,000 to 17,000 private aviation movements annually. That figure is driven by the high concentration of private wealth and estate owners visiting the destination. Furthermore, despite Cancún and the Riviera Maya corridor having over 130,000 hotel rooms compared to Los Cabos’ roughly 22,000, Los Cabos matches Cancún jet for jet on private aviation traffic. The region scales up with ultra-high-net-worth density, luxury resorts, and gated championship golf communities rather than high-volume resort tourism. Both airports are also actively expanding FBO capacity to meet peak winter and holiday demand.
KT Insider Note
The question is simple: where are you staying? If the answer is Cabo San Lucas, the Marina, Pedregal, Quivira, or Diamante, use CSL. If the answer is Chileno Bay, Querencia, Twin Dolphin, Costa Palmas, or San José del Cabo, use SJD. Knowing this before you book saves 20 to 30 minutes on arrival, which matters after a long flight.
