Los Cabos Loop Road

Join us on the famous and beautiful 4-hour road-trip. If you love a great adventurous time and are savvy enough to know how easy it is to drive here then be sure to jump in a vehicle and head out on the open road starting and finishing in Cabo San Lucas.

Oakley and I made it an early start from our corporate headquarters in Cabo. We decided to go counterclockwise to maximize the sunrise views and to have the sun at our backs through the mountains. The first half-hour we drove what is arguably the most scenic section in the Baja the Golden Corridor between Cabo and San Jose. In this section, we pass by gorgeous beaches and multi-million dollar homes, and brand-new mega-resorts. This area has become the playground of some of the richest homes and 5-star resorts in all of Mexico. As we arrive at the crossroad circle we elect to take the toll road toward the SJD international airport. This is another beautiful stretch and we can speed up on this excellent two lane highway with little morning traffic. The sun is up as we pass by the impressive Sierra de la Laguna mountains. These peaks are over 6,800 feet from Sea level and are great to explore. We pass by the airport and notice the wide range of commercial and private jets of all sizes. Once you exit the toll road and pass the airport you simply hang a left onto the Federal highway 1. This 1,063-mile wonder of desert engineering runs from Cabo north to Tijuana. It was completed in 1974 and certainly fast-tracked the development of the Baja. We start heading north of San Jose and the road narrows and what little traffic there is disappears. The next hour is an amazing winding experience through the quaint little villages of Caduaño, Miraflores, and Santiago, each having an abundance of friendly faces and outdoor adventures. This is the area most famous for waterfalls and mountain hiking. See our website www.cabosfinest.comfor specifics. From here we cross over another major bridge at the intersection of La Ribera where the new Four Seasons recently opened. Heading north toward Buena Vista we get another glimpse of the Sea of Cortez. It is a short ride along the Sea to Los Barriles and the quaint town famous for great fishing and has seen a rebirth with wind sport enthusiasts flocking here for the consistent winter winds. We continue north and for the next hour we enjoy the winding road through Las Palmas with their tall trees and mango groves. This is another great stretch of driving past centuries-old cacti and ancient granite outcroppings.

We take it nice and slow winding through this ever-winding section of road. Up and down, through and over and over this is a road worth tripping and Oakley is the perfect companion.

We take a puppy stop at the little mountain village, San Antonio, where they have seen a recent uptick from the migration of kiteboarders and outdoor adventurers that pass through on the way to the growing area of La Ventana and El Sargento. Just a few miles further is the historically significant El Triunfo.

This was the first mine in southern Baja established in the late 1700´s and was the largest town in all the B.C.S. Silver and gold were later discovered in 1862 and a boom time was established. Many of the 49ers from the California gold rush that were late for the party came here and at the peak were over 10,000 inhabitants. Many riches were made and pianos from around the world were hauled down.

The original smoke stack ´La Ramona´ is over 150 feet tall and rumored to have been designed by Gustave Eiffel. This a cool stopping point for touring and stopping for a late breakfast or early lunch. We grabbed some pastries at the El Triunfo Cafe and hit the road toward La Paz. We are roughly halfway on our loop and ready to continue this most excellent road trip.

We enjoy the last section of the two-lane road for the next 20 minutes and make the next turn unto Highway 19 and head south toward Todos Santos. This is a brisk 32-mile cruise on a wide well kept highway. It is a joy to sit back head along this straight section of highway. Oakley can relax and decides to chill on the passenger floor as I hit the accelerator. It is a short direct route into Todos Santos for our next break for lunch. There are many great choices for food and sightseeing in Todos Santos. This Pueblo Magica is indeed magical with just over 7,000 full-time residents. A pretty small town with a surprising amount of rich culture, art, and a cool surf vibe. There is a bypass around Todos Santos if you are in a hurry but we are not. After a quick bite it is time to continue our loop south onto the surf towns of Pescadero and Cerritos. The mountain range is still within view as we circle the whole range. The highway was vastly improved in 2008 to help move commerce from La Paz and the USA as Los Cabos continues to prosper. As any old-timers can tell you this used to be a rather sketchy road with few passing areas and many trucks. It is now a pleasant one-hour trip from Todos Santos to Cabo San Lucas. We wind down the final section and go from deserted desert to seeing the first traffic lights, supermarkets, and strip malls on the outskirts of Cabo San Lucas. You literally go from mountains, bays, and endless open spaces to the wildly successful resort town in a blink of the eye. If you miss the good old days of the sleepy fishing village of old Cabo all you have to do is jump in a car and head out either direction of the incredible Cabo Loop road.

Mezcal, the nectar of the Gods.

Mezcal, the nectar of the Gods.
One of the many things that we love about Mexico is the rich culture and history. The story of Mezcal is a fine example. It is legendary that Mezcal was discovered when a lightning bolt struck a mature agave plant splitting it open as it cooked the pulque into a strong Mezcal. This gift from the desert gods is a wildly popular intoxicant. Let’s take a moment to discover more…

..

While tequila has rapidly become one of the most popular and fastest-growing liquors in the world, Mezcal has seen a rapid explosion of its popularity as well. Both are distinctly Mexican in spirit.

Tequila is limited to Jalisco and 4 other surrounding states and must be produced from the Blue Agave, but Mezcal is produced throughout Mexico using over 30 varieties of agave. Many of the producers collect the agave in the wild vs cultivated and farmed making Mezcal is an artisanal profession. The piña is the heart of the plant and takes 7 to 15 years to mature. The magical state of Oaxaca is the most common area where they commonly use the Espadin variety of Agave. 570 of the 625 producers are in Oaxaca. Most villages contain numerous producers, called Fábricas or Palenques, each using methods that have been passed down from generation to generation, some using the same techniques practiced 200 years ago.

Now let us take a quick look at the four varieties of Mezcal. Blanco or Joven is young and clear, Dorado is golden in color but not aged, Reposado is aged with golden hues and the Añejo style is the darker barrel-aged variety. The best añejos are aged for four years.

Enjoying all the subtleties of Mezcal is an acquired taste. Many fans started off with clear tequila in a sweet margarita before venturing into the sipping of a fine aged añejo. We have found the Mezcal to come in a wide variety of flavors and intensity. There are so many to choose from and it will take decades to know them well. The best way is to just start trying them or go to a Mezcal tasting room or visit Oaxaca. A few Mezcals still have the worm from a moth placed inside the bottle for marketing to mainly gringos. The myth that the worm will make you hallucinate has been tried by this author and is sadly not true. Perhaps I was thinking mescaline.

In any event, the traditional way to enjoy Mezcal is straight up with a side of orange slices, or limes sprinkled with a mixture of ground fried larvae, ground chili peppers, and salt called sal de gusano. In many areas, a side of chapulines is to accompany. These are fried grasshoppers and are perfectly paired with the smokey aroma of the Mezcal.

For those of you with a light-hearted approach here is a delicious recipe for a Oaxacan Mezcal Cocktail. Trust me you will absolutely love this great cocktail and win huge points from your drinking buddies.

Step One:
Add fresh basil leaves, orange, and lime wedges to a cocktail shaker. Muddle them well.
Step Two:
Add the ice, reposado Mezcal, freshly squeezed lime juice, and agave then shake it until the ice forms on the shaker, about 30 seconds.
Step Three:
Salt the rim of a cocktail glass with sal de gusano. Fill it with ice and extra basil leaves.
Step Four:
Strain the cocktail over the ice in the glass. ¡Saludos!

Mezcal can be enjoyed with your loved ones, with a friend, in ceremonies or special occasions. You can drink it day or night or even drink it alone. No one will be there to observe your greatly improved attitude and your inclination to hum loudly and dance naked under the full moon. Or was that just the worm?

The story behind Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas

The story behind Pedregal Cabo San Lucas

Let’s take a look back in time 45 years ago to September 1975 when the first stone was placed in the first residential project call Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas…

In 1973 Architect and developer Manuel Diaz Rivera was looking for a new opportunity. One that would take him and his young family away from the fast-paced life in Mexico City. Narrowing his search to the Baja he started at the top of the peninsula and began his quest. After making it to the amazing seaside village of La Paz with its crystal lagoons and rich aquatic life his search would narrow to this wild patch of Mexico. After a trip to the southern tip, his family was amazed by the small village Cabo San Lucas and wisely decided that this should be the destination of choice. This was in 1973 and the lower Baja was only a territory of Mexico and not even established as the 32nd state until a year later.

Timing is an element that every successful developer has to be in-tune with. The completion of the Federal Hwy. 1 and the upcoming statehood were two important timelines that would make a large difference in the success of this wild idea to build a cliffside luxury development in a small fishing village. Perhaps he had some insider knowledge regarding the third piece of perfect timing, the Fonatur project Marina Cabo San Lucas; dredging beginning soon after his land purchase was completed. He was equally helped by Don Luis Bulnes the seller of the land and one of the original wild-eyed dreamers that saw beyond the tuna cannery. We will go down that wild tale in a future article. Now that the signatures were dry on his new deed a huge amount of sweat, tears and effort were just about to swing into gear.

Ok so now you have a nice large parcel of seaside cliffs with views that would earn international awards but first, you have to have the infrastructure. In 1975 that is one thing Cabo had in little supply. There were a few hotels, Mar de Cortez, Solmar, and Hotel Cabo San Lucas at Chileno Bay. La Paz was a fearful 4-hour bump fest but at least there were building supplies and groceries. Getting labor was another massive problem. Trying to convince experienced labor to move to Cabo was a hard sell. The locals were either fishing or canning tuna or working in a hotel. Were there even schools for the kids? Yes and no depending on your expectations. One of the first projects was starting a decent school and that is what they built first. Colegio El Camino is now a widely respected institution that is still going strong to this day. Workers from Miraflores were employed and then the search widened to mainland Mexico where jobs were not in such high demand.

You couldn’t just drive up the four-lane to Home Depot in those early days. Build a block factory, buy your first tractor and a carpentry shop, and get started. Then you can get into the backbreaking step of building a cobblestone masterpiece of engineering road to access this steep terrain.

The first sales were to friends and family from Mexico City. Rich fishermen here for the Marlin were next. Thank the captains for the referrals as they rounded Land’s End and the foreigners would look up and see the roads going uphill. ‘What in the world are they doing?’ I’m glad that you asked, better go talk to the jefe Manuel and his family.

Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas is still building these roads up and down the hills. Just when you think they can’t possibly build higher, there goes another massive villa higher up. Sadly Manuel passed last year in 2016 but his family is still instrumental in this amazing and wildly successful development. While it was the most expensive luxury development in all of Baja for decades, there are now many new and even more expensive players in Los Cabos. While the new offerings may be newer and more exclusive you will be hard-pressed to find a more dramatic setting. The addition of the Capella Resort that is accessed through a 1000 foot tunnel as you enter Pedregal is a 5-star wonder. Renamed the Resort at Pedregal after hurricane Odile in 2014, this resort has been honored as one of the top resorts in the world. Fitting as the Pedregal is indeed a luxury wonder unto itself.

El Arco at Land’s End

The amazing Baja Peninsula comes to a dramatic end at its southern tip. This significant rock formation is made up of ancient deteriorated granite believed to be millions of years old. This gorgeous peninsula is also the result of earthquakes and plate tectonics and was once attached to mainland Mexico. Once every few years, the upwelling of sand allows for people to walk beneath its massive arch.

The San Lucas Bay offers a ton of water activities for everyone’s enjoyment. Come on down for a visit or perhaps consider a permanent move. We are here to assist. At Cabos Finest we strive to bring you the Insider’s Guide to Los Cabos. Thank you for watching and be sure to share with your like-minded fans of Cabo.

It’s in this epic setting that local mushroom forager Arif Towns from Simbiosis, holistic chef Alicia Rutherford and Kayaks SMA join forces to take curious mushroom foraging adventurers on an epicurean journey to unravel the rather marvelous mysteries of the local fungi. After an introduction to wild foraging and our shroom hunt, we took in delicious flavors and gathered our ingredients, set up our picnic next to the water, build a fire and prepared a feast with our foraged ingredients over botanical drinks and refreshing sangria, mezcal and red wines. But not before the sun broke out to warm and dry us as we enjoyed turns of kayaking and swimming in the lake.

Picnic in the Mountains – San Jose Del Cabo

In this episode of Baja Adventures we are heading up to the mountains to find some swimming holes. One of the many things we love about living in Los Cabos is the beautiful mountains. After our summer rains the dry Arroyos fill up and there are many pools and springs to discover.Head up highway 1 past the SJD airport and the first left (dirt road) after the prison is Calle Naranja. It is also the road that leads to the Retiro Budista or Buddhist Retreat high in the Sierra de la Lagunas.

About 20 minutes off the highway on the dirt road the first water crossing is found. This is a good stop to explore and see if there are many tadpoles. There are many colorful dragonflies darting about. Oakley takes his first swim and then we head back in the truck and go higher. As we climb the temperature is cooler but still warm so we on the lookout for large fig trees and native date palms for shade. We find a great spot for lunch and unpack our delicious picnic. Oakley patiently waits for a snack. It’s a good time for a cold beer and some mezcal. If you haven’t taken the time to discover the Baja mountains then start planning now. The summer and fall are ideal times, the mountains are so green you may think you’re in Hawaii. We just love being in nature and away from the bustle. It is so tranquil and just damn nice up here. We met a couple families that were doing the same and everyone had big smiles and friendly greetings. One of them even shared a giant ripe mango with us!

The hard part is leaving. Oakley refuses to get back in the truck so I have to carry him.

El Triunfo Baja California

El Triunfo is a small mining town 45 minutes from Todos Santos. In 1862, silver and gold were discovered in the southern B.C.S. mountains, leading miners from Mexico and the United States to set up camp. Once the largest city in B.C.S, it was home to more than 10,000 miners.

Pianos and other instruments were brought to El Triunfo from all over the world and a piano museum still exists. Another remnant of the past is the 35-meter-high smokestack designed by Gustav Eiffel. The mines shut down in 1926 and most people left. The 2010 census reported a population of 321 inhabitants.

Recently folks with the heart to restore and the muscle and determination to do something about it restored and opened Caffe Triunfo. This an excellent option for a meal while you explore this cool town. They and others are in the process of restoring several of the other old buildings and converting them to restaurants, museums, boutiques, etc. in an effort to attract tourism.

The friendly locals are all smiles and are delighted to see the improvements in the town. This beautiful mountain town is at an elevation of 1,585 and feels like it is lost in time. You still see Caballero’s riding horses.

So after we explored the sights and ate a great meal we were ready for our ride back to Todos Santos. On your next trip to Baja be sure to add a day trip to El Triunfo, you will love it.
