Awe, that blissful feeling you get when you arrive, is tangible. We found this oasis in the desert many years ago when they first opened. In those days they had only four suites, each a corner upstairs unit in the grand villa. It was immediately apparent this was not your ordinary small hotel, but a rare jewel in a magical location. It is far enough outside of Todos Santos to feel remote, but close enough to town for exploring the wonderful restaurants, shops, art galleries and natural wonders of the Pueblo Magico that is Todos Santos.
Who designed and created this amazing property? Matt and Jessica Canepa did when they decided to quit the corporate life, move to Southern Baja and start a small hotel and raise a family. They slowly grew their business and added more rooms. Currently, there are 15 separate units, a lovely restaurant, the organic farm, the renovated pool area, walking paths through the farm, a double decked palapa, outdoor dining and meeting areas and plans for further expansion. The addition of The Green Room restaurant 3 years ago allows the public to get a taste for the magic of this location while watching the sun setting over the blue Pacific. The generous en-suite baths feature bodets, twin sinks, luxurious shower and a custom soaking tub. The outdoor terrace has overhanging eaves for shade with room for dining for two, lounge chairs and a wide hammock. The cute picket gate leads directly to the private fire pit and only steps to the lovely stretch of beach. We did not see anyone else on the beach the whole stay except for an occasional fishing panga zipping past.
The Bodega Suites are adjacent to the pool area and feature generously sized bedrooms, a sitting area and a large ocean view veranda. Each en-suite bath has twin sinks and is comfortable and fully stocked. Privacy is a key design element. Here you feel in tune with the flow of the surf and the pace of the lazy days and the gentle ocean breezes.

This 25-acre destination is best described as an oasis where urban sensibility meets organic farm in the Baja. The heart and soul of this is the award-winning project is the restaurant and bar. Executive Chef Larbi brings an elegant yet simple style that focuses on organic produce and meats. The vibrant atmosphere of the jungle combined with the music of their in-house DJ and the inventive cocktails of their mixologists creates a unique dining experience in the foothills of the Sierra de la Lagunas.
Insider tip, the slow-cooked chicken with the most delectable sauce may just be the most tender and delicious we have ever enjoyed. Taking a cue from their famous sister bar Keefer in Vancouver they have elevated this experience with a Mexican twist. The folks at Acre have a deep understanding of the nuances of Mezcal and their private label selection is on display on the rooftop tasting area. They recently added a second breakfast and lunch restaurant called Fausto’s Cafe. This is a welcome addition and is a nice modern cafe with indoor and outdoor dining and bakery.
The farm-to-table idea is a trending as well as a healthy alternative. The herbs, vegetables, and fruits are all farmed by their large and friendly staff that daily harvest for their patrons and lucky villa owners and treehouse renters. We feel fortunate to meet so many wonderful people during our stay in the opulent three-bedroom villa.
The check-in was easy and the tour of the villa was delightful. Downstairs has a front sitting area ideal for book reading. The open floor plan makes the kitchen the center of attention. The long island served as a dining area next to a large comfortable living room and adjacent to the family room with a TV. The pocket doors open to the large backyard featuring another bar, outdoor dining, fireplace, bbq, heat lamp, and heated private pool.
We really loved the ground-floor master suite. The private outdoor shower and two-person velvety smooth redwood soaking tub were enjoyed daily. Upstairs are two well-appointed bedrooms with en-suite and views. The top roof deck is inviting and a great place for sunset cocktails.

Treehouse Hotel: The 12 treehouses are perched above the jungle. Accessed by wide stairs they each have private decks that are well spaced throughout the dense palms. These rustic rooms feature plush king beds and each has bathrooms and outdoor showers. This is an excellent nightly rate option and a fun and unique stay in a boutique hotel treehouse.
Activities around Acre include biking, bocce ball, daily yoga classes, pickleball, ping pong, harvesting, animal rescue, and a most relaxing pool. Acre is a great place for weddings, gatherings, and special occasions. On our first evening, they held a small wedding and the attention to detail was fantastic! The outdoor event was held at the pool and the mango deck where an excellent live band played.
The week passed by like a lazy, relaxing dream. The tranquility seeps deeply. We can see why the members come back and spend multiple weeks each year at Acre. The combination of having a second home with an attentive friendly staff, world-class bar and restaurants, activities, and the relaxed atmosphere created in this jungle oasis in the Baja desert.

All meats served at Flora’s Field Kitchen come from their nearby 150-acre ranch where animals are humanely raised on diets that do not include hormones or antibiotics. The experience gives you the feeling of wellness and balance that is incorporated into their menu and way of life. It is actually a simple formula, combine handmade food using farm-fresh ingredients.What they have accomplished on these 25 acres is amazing, every corner has been utilized yet feels open and not cramped. There are the little things like their own home made ice cream and there is the mind blowing Hillside hayloft and Culinary Cottages that encircle the edges of the property. These owners have access to the fields, private pools and privileges to the grounds and spa. We spent a joyous week in a two bedroom Hillside Hayloft. Being seasoned travelers did not diminish the awe we experienced upon walking into the villa. The attention to detail is apparent around every corner and every nook and cranny. The main kitchen is a chefs delight with all the accoutrements you would expect from this world reknowned culinary resort. The open and light living room is perfect and the second family room can be used as a third bedroom. The salt water plunge pool is heated and we delighted in the cedar soaking tub each day and night. The bedrooms are spacious and separated making this a place for privacy while attaining the mountain views beyond San Jose.
Our private tour of the grounds was inspirational. The vibe of the place is tangible. You are at once transported and relaxed growing thirsty for their signature juices. So we headed back to the Bar to order a round and start thinking about our lunch. But first how about two of the best cocktails? I ordered the smoky Mezcal Margarita and Sandra tried the Cilantro Gin and Tonic. After a wonderful lunch prepared by Chef Guillermo we decided to get some sun at the Flora Spa and pool. This is for owners and guests staying at their signature cottages and villas. There are also many private gathering areas for members as well as activities each day. We also took advantage of their recently opened beach club at nearby La Laguna. They are offering new beachfront flats for sale fractionally as well.We took great joy in harvesting our own veggies each day and felt inspired to cook our daily pickings. We met many of the owners who came from all over North America. Everyone staying there seems genuinely happy to be part of this farming community.
We ended the week as we began it by preparing a healthy fresh picked organic meal. Narrowing his search to the Baja he started at the top of the peninsula and began his quest. After making it to the amazing seaside village of La Paz with its crystal lagoons and rich aquatic life his search would narrow to this wild patch of Mexico. After a trip to the southern tip, his family was amazed by the small village Cabo San Lucas and wisely decided that this should be the destination of choice. This was in 1973 and the lower Baja was only a territory of Mexico and not even established as the 32nd state until a year later.
Timing is an element that every successful developer has to be in-tune with. The completion of the Federal Hwy. 1 and the upcoming statehood were two important timelines that would make a large difference in the success of this wild idea to build a cliffside luxury development in a small fishing village. Perhaps he had some insider knowledge regarding the third piece of perfect timing, the Fonatur project Marina Cabo San Lucas; dredging beginning soon after his land purchase was completed. He was equally helped by Don Luis Bulnes the seller of the land and one of the original wild-eyed dreamers that saw beyond the tuna cannery. We will go down that wild tale in a future article. Now that the signatures were dry on his new deed a huge amount of sweat, tears and effort were just about to swing into gear.
Ok so now you have a nice large parcel of seaside cliffs with views that would earn international awards but first, you have to have the infrastructure. In 1975 that is one thing Cabo had in little supply. There were a few hotels, Mar de Cortez, Solmar, and Hotel Cabo San Lucas at Chileno Bay. La Paz was a fearful 4-hour bump fest but at least there were building supplies and groceries. Getting labor was another massive problem. Trying to convince experienced labor to move to Cabo was a hard sell. The locals were either fishing or canning tuna or working in a hotel. Were there even schools for the kids? Yes and no depending on your expectations. One of the first projects was starting a decent school and that is what they built first. Colegio El Camino is now a widely respected institution that is still going strong to this day. Workers from Miraflores were employed and then the search widened to mainland Mexico where jobs were not in such high demand.
You couldn’t just drive up the four-lane to Home Depot in those early days. Build a block factory, buy your first tractor and a carpentry shop, and get started. Then you can get into the backbreaking step of building a cobblestone masterpiece of engineering road to access this steep terrain.
The first sales were to friends and family from Mexico City. Rich fishermen here for the Marlin were next. Thank the captains for the referrals as they rounded Land’s End and the foreigners would look up and see the roads going uphill. ‘What in the world are they doing?’ I’m glad that you asked, better go talk to the jefe Manuel and his family.
Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas is still building these roads up and down the hills. Just when you think they can’t possibly build higher, there goes another massive villa higher up. Sadly Manuel passed last year in 2016 but his family is still instrumental in this amazing and wildly successful development. While it was the most expensive luxury development in all of Baja for decades, there are now many new and even more expensive players in Los Cabos. While the new offerings may be newer and more exclusive you will be hard-pressed to find a more dramatic setting. The addition of the Capella Resort that is accessed through a 1000 foot tunnel as you enter Pedregal is a 5-star wonder. Renamed the Resort at Pedregal after hurricane Odile in 2014, this resort has been honored as one of the top resorts in the world. Fitting as the Pedregal is indeed a luxury wonder unto itself.
