It all started with the dreams of a wealthy married celebrity couple. Rod Rodriguez the son of an ex-President of Mexico and his starlet wife Lucille Bremer had a vision. They met and fell in love in Los Angeles in the late 1940s. While on an adventurous fishing trip Rod decided to purchase a large 10,000-acre parcel south of La Paz. They built the first and only luxury resort called Hotel Las Cruces. It is still open today 70 years later. They invited their friends Desi and Lucy, Bing Crosby, Robert Fisher, Charles ‘Buck’ Jones and Roger Bacon.With the success of the first resort, Rod went on to build the Palmilla in San Jose del Cabo and the Hotel Hacienda in Cabo San Lucas. The list of famous celebrities grew with Kirk Douglas, John Wayne, John Steinbeck, and Frank Sinatra. Prince and princesses, dignitaries, and even President Eisenhower were known to escape to the wild shores of the lower Baja peninsula where the fishing remains legendary and the margaritas chilled.
What drew these luminaries to this wild stretch of land was the same that draws the most famous today, gorgeous beaches surrounded by desert mountains, amazing world-class luxury accommodations and full-service amenities brought with a warm smile. Sure they would go to Tahoe, Palm Springs, Vegas, and Hawaii but here they could get away from the maddening crowds, the constant clicking of paparazzi, and the stares from the gawking public. In Los Cabos, these habitually harassed could relax, chill by the Sea and escape for a few moments. It must be nice to feel they are just people enjoying the abundant sunshine, the freshly caught seafood, and the colorful sunsets.There is still something quite magical about Los Cabos. Sure it has exploded on the international scene as one of the world’s top luxury destinations but the original magic remains.
