Picnic in the Mountains – San Jose Del Cabo

In this episode of Baja Adventures we are heading up to the mountains to find some swimming holes. One of the many things we love about living in Los Cabos is the beautiful mountains. After our summer rains the dry Arroyos fill up and there are many pools and springs to discover.Head up highway 1 past the SJD airport and the first left (dirt road) after the prison is Calle Naranja. It is also the road that leads to the Retiro Budista or Buddhist Retreat high in the Sierra de la Lagunas.

About 20 minutes off the highway on the dirt road the first water crossing is found. This is a good stop to explore and see if there are many tadpoles. There are many colorful dragonflies darting about. Oakley takes his first swim and then we head back in the truck and go higher. As we climb the temperature is cooler but still warm so we on the lookout for large fig trees and native date palms for shade. We find a great spot for lunch and unpack our delicious picnic. Oakley patiently waits for a snack. It’s a good time for a cold beer and some mezcal. If you haven’t taken the time to discover the Baja mountains then start planning now. The summer and fall are ideal times, the mountains are so green you may think you’re in Hawaii. We just love being in nature and away from the bustle. It is so tranquil and just damn nice up here. We met a couple families that were doing the same and everyone had big smiles and friendly greetings. One of them even shared a giant ripe mango with us!

The hard part is leaving. Oakley refuses to get back in the truck so I have to carry him.

10 things you didn’t know about Los Cabos and Baja California Sur

#1 Land’s End is not the southern most point.

Yes the iconic arch is a beautiful symbol of the southern tip. It is not however the southern most point. That distinction goes to Cabo Falso a few miles west and a smidge more south. That is the point where the Pacific begins at the old Lighthouse. This was the first permanent structure built in 1905. It was decommissioned when the new lighthouse was built on the top of the mountain. The old lighthouse has been surrounded by the Quivira golf course to the disappointment of the local history buffs. It was once a favorite area for ATV tours.

#2 Our state has the most beaches in Mexico.

The beaches in Baja California Sur are amazing and very clean due to the remoteness and the prevailing ocean currents. To the south of the tip you will have to go 12,863 km or just under 8,000 miles until you reach land in Antarctica. So do not swim south. To the east is Hawaii 4718 km or about 3,000 miles. The state coastline measures 2230 km just under 1400 miles. That makes it Mexico’s longest with 22% of the total. It also has the most islands, predominately in the Gulf of California. Side note our Sea of Cortez has a Nickname- El Acuario Del Mundo (The aquarium of the world.) Mexicans prefer to call the Sea of Cortez el Golfo de California due to the nasty, murderous reputation of Hernán Cortés

#3 BCS is the least crowded state in Mexico.

With all the new hotels and developments popping up all over the place one could mistakenly think we are getting crowded. Especially on Medano Beach during Spring Break. But BCS has the lowest population of any state in Mexico and a huge amount of land with 73,909 km2 (28,536 sq mi) and less than 1 million inhabitants. Another reason to rent a Jeep and go adventuring.

#4 We are the newest state in Mexico.

Baja California Sur is the newest state admitted into Mexico October 8, 1974. Prior known as El Territorio Sur de Baja California (Southern Territory of Baja.) We were similar to the territory of Puerto Rico to the USA, except we received better aid and respect from our sovereign nation. The year 1974 was a big deal as that was when Highway 1 was completed and the year the San Lucas Marina was opened.

#5 We own the luxury category for resorts.

We have 4 of the top 100 resorts in the world according to Condé Nast and have the highest average hotel rates in Mexico at $300 a night, plus a heavy hotel tax of 13% plus the IVA of 16% OUCH! But that higher cost and level of luxury gives us an unique experience and highest quality of restaurants, yacht charters, activities, tours and infrastructure. You don’t have to stay in the top four luxury resorts to have an amazing stay as there are a wide range of great properties in every price category.

#6 We have beautiful mountains.

People know us for our ample supply of clean beaches, the bio diversity of our waters, the epic fishing and the world class golfing. Most don’t know us for our amazing mountain ranges. These mountains are up to 2,080 m (6,820 ft)in the Sierra de la Lagunas. There are many waterfalls, hot springs and swimming holes in which to choose. So on your next visit be sure to explore the mountain towns of Miraflores, Santiago, el Triunfo and Aqua Calientes. The name means The lakes of the sierras but that is due to the ancient lake beds high up in the mountain range. Today there are no natural lakes.

#7 Los Cabo’s is exploding in growth.

You may know there are new hotels by the looks of the numerous cranes up and down the corridor. What you didn’t know is that there are 20+ major developments currently underway within Los Cabos. The international jet setters have discovered just how wonderful we have it here on our desert by the sea. The big boy luxury companies are ‘all in’ with some massive plans. Names like Montage, Ritz Carlton Reserve, The Luxury Collection at Solaz, St Regis Los Cabos, Cesar’s Palace, Nobu Hotel, Hard Rock, Aman Resorts, Park Hyatt and two separate Four Seasons

are either in construction or being planned. If you are missing the simple ways of the old Cabo don’t despair all you need to do is rent a Jeep and head out to Cerritos, Cabo Pulmo, Ventanas or Pescadero. There are plenty of wonderful boutique hotel options all over the southern tip so remember you have options.

#8 Most everyone in Los Cabos is from somewhere else.

Cabo San Lucas used to be a small, sleepy fishing village of a few thousand lucky souls. Today there are people from all over the world living and working in Los Cabos. If you are over 25 years old you are most likely from somewhere else. In our neighborhood alone we have friends from Italy, Britain, Spain, Poland, Columbia, Chile, Brazil and of course Canada, USA and Mexicans from all over Mexico. You never know which language will be spoken at the pool. Fortunately for us most speak decent English. Side note- this diversity brings a great wealth and variety of restaurants.

#9 Mount Solmar is really Cerro Del Vigia.

The mountain above the arch is commonly called Mount Solmar due to the original hotel Solmar by Luis Bulnes. Long before this fishing lodge the 560 foot mountain was called El Vigía or the Watcher. This was an ideal lookout for incoming galleons of pirates or even worse Spanish missionaries

The Arch is part of the oldest rock formation that dates back an estimated 84 million years. That makes it truly old and appears to be sculpted sand stone but is in fact ancient granite. The whole peninsula splintered from mainland approximately 4 million years ago during a giant seismic event that is still active today called the San Andreas Fault.

#10 Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach have a dubious origin.

Originally the two beaches had just one name Playa Doña Chepita. The old time Choyeros (local Cabo residents that were born here) still use this term to refer to the Beach that was used for the oldest business in the world. Yes Seniorita Doña Chepa was a working girl who used this isolated area to sell her services to the fishermen of the area. Once the wives found out about their husbands proclivities they were possibly going to end up divorciado. The name Playa Amor was an inside joke that the gringos mistook as Lover’s Beach and the wider Pacific beach became Playa Divorcio or Divorce Beach. In any event this is a place of romance both innocent and unsavory.

What is it like to live in Los Cabos as a foreigner?

We are often asked why we moved to Los Cabos and what it is like to live here. Well the first part of that question seems obviously self evident. Really just look around you. We have an amazingly beautiful slice of paradise on the tip of this gorgeous peninsula.

The stark beauty of the mountains and desert often get overshadowed by the clean empty beaches, rocky coves and sea life filled bays.

Both the majestic Pacific Ocean and the bio diverse Sea of Cortez have hundreds of miles of undeveloped beach front. Where else can you find a mild desert climate in the tropics? In our modern age you can live, work or retire most anywhere in the world. Once you are liberated and awaken to that fact Los Cabos makes most every short list.

The abundance of natural wonders and wonderful climate are but two reasons. Let us now go a little deeper and discover the other worthy reasons and what it is like living in Los Cabos as an foreigner.

Los Cabos is an International Community

We live in a small neighborhood a few miles from Cabo and are surrounded by neighbors from all over the globe. There are people here from Chile, Spain, Italy, France, Poland, Britain and of course USA and Canada and all parts of Mexico. You never know what language will be spoken at the pool.

Although our current political divide is wide, we all get along wonderfully well. Since most everyone is from somewhere else we all strive to help out each other. I find a common bond in my fellow neighbors. We all are here to enjoy a new life and leave the stress behind. Sure things are different but isn’t that the point.Los Cabos has modern infrastructure

While the highways, marinas, airports, utilities and general infrastructure are a little behind major US standards, we enjoy better than most in other developed nations. And with the huge amount of tax income generated from a robust tourist trade our future looks bright. Our location allows ease of travel and is ideal for North Americans looking for a new place that is convenient to those friends and family left behind.

You can always go visit them and vise versa. The number of non stop flights to USA and Canada has quadrupled and with our ever expanding airport the options keep expanding. Plus if there is major hurricane threatening, you can always batten down the hatches, grab the pets and head up Highway 1 ahead of the storm. Just try that on an island.Mexico enjoys a lower cost of living

It is no surprise that you can keep more of your hard earned cash in Mexico. Sure there are some of the most expensive luxury resorts, restaurants and private communities in the world in Los Cabos. There are plenty of affordable alternatives. In fact most expenses are less than major US cities. From taxes, food, education, medical, insurance and housing. You just need to know your best options and where to go just like anywhere else.

Los Cabos offers great Health Care alternatives. Not only do we enjoy modern clinics, hospitals, dentists and health care providers the costs are lower and the insurance is a fraction of the price you’d expect to pay up north.Another reason we love living here is because Los Cabos is fun and offers a huge range of exciting recreational options.

Besides world famous fishing and golfing we have everything you need to an active lifestyle. The list is too long so just trust me on this one we have everything except the cold winter sports to keep you active.Food glorious Food is another reason to live here. Los Cabos has an internationally acclaimed restaurant scene. I don’t know about you but we just love great food. One of the things we love most about Los Cabos is the wide variety of restaurants in which to choose. Anywhere from Michelin star quality restaurant to the best street tacos on the planet, variety and quality abound. First off are the amazing Mexican restaurants.

There are Mexicans from all over the country bringing their best regional dishes so you can count on the best Authentic Mexican food for sure. Plus you have an expanding list of new options from all over the planet. So if you craze variety and quality in your diet Los Cabos is for you.Now for the last and perhaps best reason to make Los Cabos your home, the warm and friendly Mexican Culture. Forget what your nervous neighbors and paranoid news rooms are spouting about Mexico, we have found from first hand experience that Los Cabos is a safe, secure and wonderful community. Sure things are at a slower pace and people work to live versus live to work.

This slower pace and focus on family, friends and fiestas are contagious. We often visit our friends and family up north and every time we return knowing we made a great decision moving to Baja. The flight home is full of happy people looking forward to their next well earned Cabo vacation while we smile knowing this is our home. Now that is refreshing. So whether you are looking for the perfect paradise to retire or a place to start a new life, Los Cabos is an ideal choice.

For more details we are happy to assist you. In fact that is exactly what we do. You will love your new Cabo Lifestyle. We sure do. This video was brought to you by CabosFinest your Insiders Guide to Los Cabos.

Salvatore’s G

Everyone that loves Italian food must discover the wonderful flavors of Salvatore’s. It is so popular that we recommend a reservation and even then it is commonly booked up. Tim Galluzzo the happy owner has added a second restaurant Salvatore’s G. This has the same wonderful menu plus he’s added delicious steaks and soon to open a wood burning pizza oven. We just love the ambiance of this place with its long bar, comfortable seating and large screen TV’s plus it has tons of space indoors with AC and outdoor dining options.

So you have the same great Salvatore’s menu with a sports bar and steakhouse with AC. We locals just love having this option especially during the warm summer months. That are currently remodeling the back patio adding another bar and a wood burning pizza oven They offer nightly specials and can handle special events and provide catering..
