Ildefonso Green, the legend behind San José del Cabo, was born on January 23, 1830, in Cabo San Lucas, the son of a Swedish sailor named Esteban Green and a local mother from San José del Cabo. A politically connected bandit named Ramón Valdés had been terrorizing and extorting the people around San José del Cabo. Green confronted him in the street. The duel ended with Valdés dead and the plaza quiet again. It was the kind of moment that turns a man into a story.

He died on March 27, 1932, in San José del Cabo, at the remarkable age of 102.
