The latest superyacht to visit Cabo is The Aquila. With an impressive size of 280’ she is not the largest yacht but is one of the most beautiful to grace our busy bay. This is a rare American-built super yacht and is the largest built sine 1930. The majestic presence is built by Derecktor who unveiled her as Cakewalk before the Walmart family purchased her for a mere $150m and did a massive remodel in 2016. The Walton family have an estimated combined net worth of $149B one can assume the annual costs of $15M to be a mere pittance. Would you like to charter this gorgeous yacht? Sorry she is not for rent at this time.
When she was available, the rate was one million per week. Ann Walton Kroenke is the official owner. She and her husband Stan own other yachts, but this is the largest. Stan is the owner of the LA Rams, the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and the U.K.’s Arsenal soccer club.
Aboard the Aquila there are 7 guest suites accommodating up to 14 lucky ducks with a crew of 28. We saw the young good looking crew at the marina yesterday as they hauled supplies from Walmart perhaps? Maybe they get a discount. There are many wonderful features about this majestic ship that came from the 1,000 people hired to refit her. including a new forward sun deck with jacuzzi, a cinema, four aft decks providing an abundance of outdoor space. Aquila also boasts a beach club deck complete with DJ booth, AV system, smoke machine and light show. Inside, a cool, calm and contemporary interior creates an aura of tranquillity. Icy silvers, dark browns peppered with nickel and clean whites are accented with patterned soft furnishings and tasteful lighting. The focal piece of the yacht though has to be the 11.2-metre ‘waterfall’ chandelier which cascades down four levels from the sun deck down to the lower deck creating shards of light across the white marble floor.
In any event it is a pleasure to watch these super yachts in the Cabo Bay. This season we have seen so many including La Datcha and the new record holder Octopus owned by Roger Samuelsson, founder of SHL Healthcare a swedish big pharma billionaire. Go figure.
