The Storyline and History of Los Cabos

Once upon a time, the sleepy fishing village of Cabo San Lucas was cut off from the world due to its remoteness. Every day the people toiled and struggled to feed their families. One day Rod Rodriguez the son of a former President of Mexico decides to build a fishing resort for wealthy celebrities.

He and his American actress wife Lucille Bremer built the very first resort in southern Baja naming it Hotel Rancho de Las Cruces. They invited their celebrity friends from Hollywood who spread the legend of the incredible beauty and amazing fishing to be had on the southern shores on the Baja. This 10,000-acre retreat was only accessible by private plane or large yacht which drew the wealthy celebrities from California and the rich oil barons of Texas.

One day while flying over the southern tip, Rod found a favorable bay near the small colonial town of San Jose called Punta Palmilla. He purchased this area as well as the Bahia Chileno and began construction of the Hotel Palmilla in 1956. He hired both Bud Parr and Carlos Ungson who both went on to be pioneers of Los Cabos. In 1961 the Hotel Cabo San Lucas opened on the gorgeous Bahia de Chileno. Further cementing Los Cabos as the fishing capital for the rich and famous.Soon after construction of The Camino Real commenced and opened on the famous Medano Beach in 1964.

Another private airstrip was constructed on what is now the Cabo Marina. This iconic hotel was bought by Bud Parr renamed The Hotel Hacienda in 1977. The impressive Hotel Finisterra was opened in 1972 by Luis Bulnes on the craggy hillside overlooking both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. Two years later Sr Bulnes opens Solmar Suites Hotel on the southern tip.

Because of these original hotels and tales of the amazing fishing, the government of Mexico got involved. In 1974 they began dredging a modern marina, constructed the daring 1000 mile transpeninsular highway opened an international airport and designated BCS as the newest state to Mexico. And here we are today.

Los Cobos is recognized as one of the top luxury destinations in the world. With already some of the most award-winning resorts Los Cabos is currently exploding in growth. And for good reason. Where else is there such raw natural beauty, clean air and beaches, friendly people and a safe, convenient location as Los Cabos in Baja California Sur.

The big boys of luxury resorts have either just opened or are being built. Names like Ritz Carlton Reserve, The Montage, The Four Seasons, Aman resorts, Nobu, Hard Rock, Cesar’s Palace and the St Regis Los Cabos are redefining luxury beach resorts. The future sure is bright for this once sleepy fishing village where Land Ends and adventure begins. Come join us you will be glad you did. This storyline of Los Cabos is brought to you by Cabos Finest your Insiders Guide to Los Cabos.

Acre Restaurant Treehouse Hotel

We dined on their brunch menu at the bar area. We were greeted by the mascot Burrito, a recent rescued Burro who thinks he is a puppy. Oakley was not too sure about that description and kept a watchful eye.The open kitchen gives diners a show. These chefs are blessed with freshly grown ingredients and utilize a wood fired bbq.

The bar is a world unto itself with a tasting room for the house tequila. The mixologists have award winning drinks and there is no lack of variety. We chose the Ojo Rojos to go with our brunch. The simple salad was a delight with fresh arugula, radishes and tomato picked that morning at the farm, the ricotta cheese was also hand made fresh and the beet crostini gave it a nice crunch. I chose the hearty Bacon Ranch Fried Chicken Sammy with sweet potatoes chips. Both were delicious. The farm to table concept is alive and well in this area with both Flora Farms and Tamarindo restaurants close by.

Team Cabos Finest always enjoy doing restaurant reviews and this was another chance to spend some time at this amazing destination. The grounds include the farm, pool area, events lawn, fire pits, bocci ball, trail systems throughout the grounds and hotel tree-houses. The Acre animal family includes peacocks, roosters, Nigerian dwarf goats, puppies needing a home, and don’t forget Burrito the burro.

The tree-houses are rustic meets modern with walls constructed of locally used branches. These sit high up off the ground with nice intimacy and privacy. We spoke to some couples who were enjoying their stay and all seemed thrilled with this unique hotel concept. Nightly rates start at $275. Each tree-house has a king sized bed, a small bathroom, outdoor shower, wi-if and patio overlooking the grounds.

Stays include daily two-course breakfast, morning yoga, and free rein to enjoy all the ever-growing grounds have to offer. The restaurant and bar are the centers of attention and the heart of acre. The staff are all smiles and happy to make your meal experience. Savor it in Chef Luzande’s food, a marriage of global influences and local ingredients that evolves with the seasons.

Taste it in their innovative cocktail program, with award-winning concoctions. Overall I would describe the time at Acre as relaxed but refined. We left feeling happy and content and will surely return for another tasty meal.
