Three finger reefs spread out from the shore line of this jewel of a tiny town. The second largest reef in the Pacific and the only hard coral reef in North America, Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is something we can be extremely proud to have and protect and maintain.
It’s an easy 90 minute drive north of San Jose Del Cabo up Highway 1 with the last 20 minutes by firm graded dirt road that is passable with most any rental car. We always enjoy taking the longer and rougher coast road through the East Cape on our return to civilization.
There are some nice options for staying overnight and a handful of restaurants serving authentic local cuisine. The reef is the main draw for obvious reasons but don’t miss out on the hiking, beach walking and exploring the hills and mountains that surround the area. If you spend the evening and are lucky to have no moon, the night sky seems so dense and bright you will be astonished by the universes’ expansiveness.
Bioluminescent night dives are popular as well as a wide array of day water activities from an easy snorkel to advanced scuba options. The community is itself so laid back and friendly that you genuinely feel welcomed and appreciated especially if you respect their love of the place and leave to trace of your visit.
Pressure from developers and from commercial fishing must be stopped if we are to keep this rare gem intact. We all must be diligent and supportive of this park. Yes go visit and help this community stay economically viable but voice your dissent for any large resorts or developments. Let’s face the reality that our fair southern Baja is and will continue to grow. We need to support the effort to protect the natural wonders that make our state so special. Cabo Pulmo is well worth that effort.

Top 3 Beachfront Developments Los Cabos
A few years ago, oceanfront land in the corridor was available at a reasonable price. Reasonable is a state of mind, just ask any economist. Well I can tell you this, if you desire beachfront in the corridor today it will be at a premium. And why not, if you consider the variables. Los Cabos is a perfect scenario of ideal. Add up those checks for versus against and you have a lop-sided Four. Here are a few reasons: natural beauty, fishing, golf, sailing, yachting, ocean, sea, mountains, community, infrastructure, health care, low property taxes, friendly locals and ideal weather. The style of living in the Baja seeps slowly and deeply into your new relaxed lifestyle. Here we present the very best of the oceanfront communities.
El Dorado Golf & Beach Club
This Discovery Land Co. project was the first Mexican destination for the wildly successful developer of ultra exclusive private communities. Mike Meldman purchased the oceanfront golf course from Sanchez Navarro at a ripe time when that money would go into further developing the massive Puerto Los Cabos Marina. What a fortunate mixture of opportunity, risk and reward. The immediate success of this high end concept single handedly changed the real estate market and raised the bar to high end private developments. While the Pedregal has its appeal with its close proximity to CSL and cliff side vistas, and the Palmilla has its own style and flavor, El Dorado raised the bar for exclusive members only. The founding members were easily convinced to join his then latest private club. This gave El Dorado a financial boost and they immediately redesigned the Nicklaus course. The beachfront holes became 42 beach front lots ranging from 1/3 to a full acre. These custom home sites are now custom homes to a Who’s Who list of celebrities, pro athletes and CEO’s. The second and third row above the surf are perfectly elevated so every home and condo have an amazing view of white water, sea and coastline. Further expansion on the eastern side houses those steep colorful condo villas seen from the highway. Those lucky purchasers need not worry about traffic noise as there is a project currently underway to move Hwy 1 behind Cabo Real and El Dorado. The current road will become a private through-way. The far west side adjacent to The Marquis is now being sculpted for the remaining first row.
The whole project is 540 acres with a mile of beachfront smack in the middle of the corridor. Service and amenities are stand out and a signature asset of Discovery Land Co. The sense of comfortable, casual exclusivity permeates at every turn from the men and women’s club lounges to the classic rock practice facility. The members only beach club, private day spa, fitness facility with a complete recreational and lifestyle concierge team will make your Cabo experience time well spent. Prices are startling by any standards. The reason is the combination of exclusivity, location and celebrated services. Not to mention the sense of well healed community that gives members a relaxed private club atmosphere that is truly legendary.
Twin Dolphin Los Cabos
This is a three part development on the iconic site of the former Twin Dolphin Hotel. As one of the original hotel sites Twin Dolphin housed the celebrity set with Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Lucille Ball and Dezi Arnez, Bing Crosby and John Wayne. Perhaps the best swimming beach in the corridor with the ever popular Bahia Santa Maria. A favorite of the day tour boats out of Cabo San Lucas a mere 6 miles away. The amazing Playa Viudas is their second beach that comprises the shoreline of this ocean front paradise. 15 years ago we were enjoying lunch at the original hotel after a run on their nature trail as we congratulated ourselves for moving to Baja. A couple years later the purchase was completed by the Ohana Group. The hotel was torn down, the nature trail closed and the developers began sculpting the land. Public access to the two beaches continued as they slowly and meticulously reshaped the terrain over the next 10 plus years before offering the lots for purchase.
The Montage Los Cabos
Sitting front row on the half moon shaped Santa Maria Bay is the new Montage Los Cabos Hotel. With 122 guest rooms it is expected to open May 2018. Superior services and amenities will be offered including wellness center, tennis, lawn activities and the Montage Spa. Two pools and a signature immersive children’s program called Paintbox will make this a family vacation resort. Multiple dining options will focus on local seafood and organic produce. Meeting and convention facilities will be offered.
Montage Residences
Sitting directly above and behind the hotel will be 52 private Montage residences. Also opening May 2018 these single level luxury condos will have excellent views and access to all of the Montage Hotel amenities. Private dining is offered for in suite entertaining. Hiking and biking trails with access to desert, mountain and beaches will have you exploring this amazing location. Being in the middle of Los Cabos both towns are a short 10 minute drive.
Maravilla Los Cabos
For the fortunate owners of the exclusive Maravilla, one of the most amazing private beach clubs awaits called The Club; a centerpiece of the community with endless amenities and over 60,000 sq. ft of clubhouse. With private cabanas, hot tubs, fire pits, water toys, spa, yoga and fitness centers overlooking Playa Viudas. Enjoy an outdoor amphitheater, two story climbing wall, fitness palapa and staff that will make every activity feel like a private encounter. Custom homesites are offered in Las Playas and Las Colinas. All homesites are elevated allowing extraordinary whitewater views. The Santa Maria Beach Club offers bay front dining and bar services as well as a perfect place for sunbathing and aquatic adventures. A Fred Couples Signature Golf course is currently under construction.
Chileno Bay Club
Another remarkable master planned community with Golf and Beach Club, the location has the perfect blend of bays, rocks, mountains and a sloping gradient that allows for incredible white water views from all lots. The storied history of this property began when Bud Parr purchased this land and opened Hotel Cabo San Lucas in 1961. Like a grand dame with a rich past, this property has had a few marriages and lovers. The original group of investors purchased the hotel from Parr and the surrounding land on both sides of the highway. The first thing they did was move the highway to make more ocean side lots and began to design the golf course. After running into cash flow problems and unfavorable market conditions they brought in Discovery Land company to take over. The 2008 US housing market crash undermined this perfectly great arrangement. Another US developer from Aspen, CO picked up the project, rearranged the masterplan and gave it another try that did not work out. Mike Meldman and Discovery Land Company decided they wanted another go at this gorgeous piece of paradise. One only needs to see the level of building activity to see this second marriage doing exceedingly well. After some more masterplan rearranging and the addition of the Auberge Resort they began the finishing touches to the infrastructure and golf course.
Today the course is completed. The Tom Fazio course has the whitest bunkers with the darkest green contrasting the desert tan against the blue of the sea. Their finished Beach Club has every amenity and sets the standard for all future exclusive beach clubs. Their Outdoor Pursuits team give expert guidance for all mountain and beach activities. The aquatic options give everyone regardless of skill something to explore. The reef has a rich biodiversity and sits right in front of the Chileno Bay Resort.
Phase one of the Chileno Bay Resort and Residences has nearly sold out and phase two is nearly completed. This is Auberge Resort’s second property after the lovely Esperanza a few miles west. The resort surrounds a huge tiered infinity pool that steps down to the desirable Chileno Bay beach, one of the choicest swimming beaches with outstanding snorkeling in all of Los Cabos. All the requisite beach toys are on site as well as bars, restaurant and lounge.

Mocca is indeed a relaxing stay. Many of us have the luxury to work satellite and travel, hence the Business Hotel angle. If you like to travel to culturally rich places in wonderful Morelos you will have this great option in Tepoztlan. The bungalows are designed in a modern meets Mexican palapa style. Two levels of similar units with only 14 suits makes this a boutique experience. There are gardens, pool, common areas and fitness center. Each suite has a balcony with a view of the garden and a few with town and mountain views. Well equipped rooms with a European flare designed by the proprietor Rocca from the Netherlands. He has created a welcoming space for anyone that wants comfortable accommodations at a fair price. An excellent location a mere 10 minute walk to the CENTRO of town and just 2 km to the trail to Tepozteca pyramid. With its pools, gardens, common spaces, fire pit and spa they offer great amenities for a modest cost. Mainland Mexico is known for its value prices and this is value mixed with clean comforts with many extras at a great location.
We spent two delightful nights here in November and will be coming back. We were impressed with the choices of toiletries offered upon check in. There is a subterranean wine cellar with moderately priced varietals which came in handy on our first night sunset on the veranda. The weather was consistently Spring-like which is a constant in this mountainous area 90 minutes south of Mexico City. We saw an amazing variety of murals throughout this Pueblo Magico and learned about the intricacies that make this a place of wonder. Rich history, alternative lifestyles and Catholic culture make this a place of contrasts in an ironic balance of opposites. The defining edge of this place is made up of equal contrasting styles of place, time and classes mixed with harmonious warmth and soul. Even the street dogs are courteous and seem utterly serene. No one seems rushed or hurried nor would it matter as the gentle sun sets against the copper colors of the rising rocky plateaus.
Whether you are visiting this town for business or pleasure staying at Mocca is a wonderful choice. All suites are similar so the only real decision is the first or second floor. We preferred the second as the views are enhanced. The roof deck is also a great place to enjoy sunrises and sunsets. The staff is courteous and the director Rocca will greet you and give you an insider’s map and guide to the best restaurants, coffee shops and general places of interest. There is secure parking if you have a car although the town is best explored on foot. After a long day exploring the town, it is wonderful to just relax back at Mocca as the sun sets over the mountains. The comfortable beds are perfect and you will be tempted to sleep in. There are many choices of boutique hotels in Tepoztlan, this is one of the newest option, you will love the ambience, cleanliness and great location.
