Top 5 Resorts for the younger crowd

There are many great options for those looking for a younger crowd and at various prices. Here we explore the top 5 resorts for those young at heart.

Me Cabo

This was originally one of the Melia properties and then changed to Me Cabo by Melia in 2010. A focus on DJ music and a beach club environment transformed this older resort into a hip property for the millennial crowd. The location is in the heart of Medano Beach in CSL and a short walk to the Mango Deck. No need to leave the cool white on white property with a focus on modern DJ music. Nightly disco and a nice selection of bars and restaurants as well as sushi at the pool. Choose from Blue Marlin Ibiza Beach Club and the sophisticated Day and Night Rose Bar and Dare Rosa Bar. Try the YHI spa to rejuvenate and work out the body to prepare you for the night.

Hotel El Ganzo

The “Goose” is a great addition to the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San Jose. This music and art concept hotel is geared for musicians and art lovers. With a full recording studio and bar co-owned by Charlie Sheen, creative juices will flow. The roof top pool has an envious view for plenty of people watching. With just 70 suites, this is a medium sized resort. The private beach club across the Marina is protected from the Sea of Cortez for water sports and volleyball with a relaxed restaurant and bar. The Marina has a nice walking and biking trail with art, sculptures, restaurants, fishing and charter boats. You can swim with the dolphins or enjoy the golf courses, Puerto Los Cabos has lots to enjoy!

Casa Dorada Los Cabos

Another great Medano Beach option directly above the crazy Mango Deck Beach Club. This modern hotel offers great views from every room and a swimming beach. They have live music and special events so there’s always something happening. The rooms feature kitchens and balconies, two pools with comfortable loungers, plenty of shade,  and great views compliment the amenities.

The Bahia Hotel and Beach House

This was originally a value based hotel above the beach with great views until Casa Dorada opened and blocked their view. Instead of complaining and giving up the developers upgraded the whole hotel and added a great bar and restaurant -Bar Esquina and updated the pool and spa.  Word spread and occupancy rose with these improvements. They then purchased an older restaurant on the beach and converted that into the wonderful Sur Beach House and restaurant. Now they have one of the coolest value priced hotels in Los Cabos.

Hotel San Cristobal

Named after Saint Christopher the patron saint for travelers, this new boutique hotel sits oceanfront in Todos Santos. From the Bunkhouse Group in Austin, Texas comes this modern and fun property, part of the Tres Santos master planned community. A natural choice for surfers, adventurers and those looking for a modern but unique oceanfront hotel off the beaten track. With all the amenities you would want including bars, spa, pools, restaurants and an intimate boutique experience.

Why Retire in Los Cabos?

As we dream of finding that warm climate place to retire, an overwhelming number of international buyers are picking Los Cabos. For those of you that have already been smitten over the years with the occasional visit the reasons are obvious. For the unfortunates that have yet to visit, you owe it to yourselves to come take a better look.  While you are here just ask any one of the thousands of expats that make Cabo a permanent or half year residence.  We are all more than happy to share our experiences. Some fit in right away while others long for their native home and leave but not because they didn’t absolutely love living here. One of the top destinations for the wealthy, celebrity and pro athletes that can afford the ultra luxe oceanfront communities but that is not what we came for. You don’t have to be rich to own an incredible villa or condo. While it may not be ocean front it will be ocean view and typically walk to the beach range. In our condo community alone there is a wide mix of culture from the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, Central and South America and all parts of Mexico. Some came to work here, others to retire.

The list of reasons is long so let’s get started and focus on the main concerns.

Sense of Community – Los Cabos is a melting pot of North Americans and more, most everyone has relocated here rather recently.

Climate – We have been called “Scottsdale on the Beach” but that is telling only part of the story. With an average temperature of 75 degrees F and low humidity there are very few deserts in the tropics with such consistency of blue skies and cool breezes.

Modern Conveniences – Great Airports, highways, public transportation, schools, charitable organizations, retail chains, restaurants, nightlife and all the conveniences of home.

Affordability – This is a matter of perspective as you can spend huge on a $50 million mansion or find a comfortable $150,000 condo. Same goes for dining, nightlife and activities where there are bargains but also great luxuries. One just needs to see the variety of water craft in the Cabo Marina to see the variance.

Taxes – You can simply keep more of your money and spend less without giving up your quality of life. Property taxes are super low currently at about .01%. Sales Tax is high at 16% but goods are low. Everyone has their own special tax experience and needs to check with their personal accountant.

Healthcare – A long time friend of mine that moved here in the 1980’s summed it up best, “I was always planning to head back once I needed more health care but now great high-quality healthcare is all over Los Cabos”. It is true, there are many current, newly opened and large modern hospitals, dentists and health care providers that have opened up and down the Corridor. Health insurance costs are drastically lower in Mexico. The gap is widening as well as the US is dealing with excessive increases. The burden of 10,000+ Americans turning 65 daily will accelerate this trend.

Safety – We have lived here since 2004 and I can honestly say I feel very safe and secure. The Mexican culture is wonderful and accommodating to Americans and foreigners even though the US has been a less than friendly neighbor, local Mexicans genuinely like us, go figure. Unless you decide to get in the illicit drug business you are going to be safe and love your new home.

Great investment opportunities….

Lots of wide open space to explore as well as Pueblas and endless beaches…..

To sum it up, the quality of life is high, housing costs are low. Weather is ideal and the sense of community is wonderful. If you like four season weather, you are in for a disappointment. Sometimes we get a little bored with the blue sky and can go 6-9 months without consulting with the Weather Channel. Sure projects sometimes take more time and we do live in a “mañana” country. But within a Mexican Minute you will be sipping your cool beverage under a palapa on the beach.

Who knows, you may have to fly down the grand children or better yet, let their parents pay for it.

This well established company began 25 years ago in Vallarta, expanded to the Riviera Maya and now Los Cabos.

The Towers at Pacifica

This resort within a resort concept is located inside the gated community of Quivira and shares the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf and Spa Resort. Access to the Quivira Golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus makes this a wonderful choice for those wishing to play the ‘Pebble Beach’ of Mexico. These two new towers complement the overall modern design style of this minimalist resort.  With 47 new rooms with the largest a 3200 sq ft Presidential suite with private plunge pool. Top 5 Golf Resorts

Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo have remarkable golf resorts. Here we list the top 5 that transformed this destination into one of the top international golf destinations in the world. This list is only the public or semi private golf resorts not the members only courses.

The One and Only Palmilla-

Listed previously as one of the top Ultra Luxury Resorts for good reason. The One and Only Palmilla makes the grade also as a top golf resort. The Palmilla course was the first course and the first Jack Nicklaus course in Los Cabos. With 3 separate 9 hole courses, the Mountain Course, the Desert Course and the Ocean Course there is nice variety and mature landscaping that deeply contrasts the desert colors with the greenest of grass. Most of the holes are across the highway side of the corridor but have spectacular views of the coastline and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. Enjoy a nice practice facility to work out your swing prior to tee time.

Quivira Los Cabos

This mega-project has been 16 years in the making. The golf course debuted in 2015, oh boy was it worth the wait. Jack Nicklaus certainly designed a jaw dropper of a course. It has been dubbed “The Pebble Beach of Mexico” for its dramatic location along the cliffs of Cabo Falso and the old lighthouse. The resort options are numerous with Pueblo Bonito Sunset as its flagship, Pacifica and the Towers of Pacifica as its adults only all inclusive option and the Montecristo Estates and Novaspania for large villa rentals. Full ownership options are offered as well for those fortunate investors ready to go full or part time. Play the course first and you will be open to the idea of moving here permanently.

Hacienda del Mar at Cabo del Sol

The Ocean course is yet another great Nicklaus course, the second one he built that helped cement Los Cabos as a world class golfing destination. The three finishing holes in particular leave you awestruck and wanting more. A newer Desert course added by the masterful Tom Weiskopf is equally impressive. Hacienda del Mar, a Sheraton hotel and timeshare sits seaside just as you finish the ocean course. With its gorgeous beach, multiple pools, nice restaurant options and full spa, your family will have plenty of non-golfing activities to make everyone content.

The Hilton Beach & Golf Resort

The Hilton, located on the Cabo Real golf course is part of the larger Grupo Questro Golf program. Take advantage of the Questro Golf Pass which gives you access to Nicklaus designed Club Campestre and the Puerto Los Cabos Norman/Nicklaus course. Currently they are expanding Puerto Los Cabos to two separate 18 hole courses in addition to expanding the massive marina project. Robert Trent Jones III designed Cabo Real, a challenging resort course with two distinctly different nines. The front is by far the easier one so better work out your game before attempting the back nine. This resort is in and of itself an exceptional seaside attraction with a swimmable cove and huge pool.

JW Marriott Puerto Los Cabos

This newer addition to the expanding Puerto Los Cabos marina project is designed in a modern style along the dunes of the Sea of Cortez. Soon to be a shared project with the Ritz Carlton Reserve opening early in 2018. In addition the second full golf course is well under way which will total 18 Nicklaus and 18 Norman holes. Until then the two courses are striking in the style differences but both impressive. Offering an all inclusive food and beverage package which includes “comfort stations” with high quality tequila. Beware, the last three holes may get a bit sloppy but enjoyable. Start at the full practice facility to stretch out your back and begin a good round.

Tepoztlan – Morelos Mexico

A Pueblo Magico, Tepotzlan is know for it´s healing powers. People from all over the world have been coming here for rejuvenation and relaxation. The pyramid mountain top, Tepotzteco built centuries ago can be accessed by a a steep mountain climb winding upwards over volcanic rocks.

The puebla itself is enchanting with all the stone paved winding streets, brightly painted restaurants and shops. The cathedral built in the 1600s recently suffered damage from the earthquake of September 2017 and the trial up to the pyramid.

Villa Santa Cruz Todos Santos

If quaint boutique on a surf beach is your desire, Villa Santa Cruz will exceed your expectations. Only minutes from downtown Todos Santos but a world away from the lights and paved roads.

This is the Baja that dreams are made of. Rarely do you encounter a vacation property that has an attention to detail so finely engrained that even their house tequila is custom labeled in a barrel. The property was purchased in 2001 and slowly developed into this unmistakably delightful retreat. With only four suites in this hacienda style home on acreage you wonder how they can offer so many amenities for such a modest price.

The grounds are meticulously maintained. Rooms are each unique and what great, comfortable bedding. The towels and robes are lush. The pool area is just steps from the house and will make you forget about the gorgeous beach until you desire a surf session or a long walk down the beach. The double decked palapa has shaded hammocks on the beach and the second story is like its own living room in a tree house with views that seem endless.

The home is a two story hacienda with comfortable shared living space on the ground level and the four separate suites on the second level. The stairs are an engineering marvel made of steel and glass tiles. The roof deck enjoys a bar, living area and a fire pit for those cooler desert evenings. Star gazing on the roof is perfect since there are no city lights, especially on evenings with no moon. The villa is so comfortable and well equipped that you won’t want to leave. We were planning a nice dinner in Todos Santos with plenty of exceptional options but decided to cook in and enjoy the place to ourselves. The open kitchen is a gourmet’s delight plus BBQ grill equipped with everything for a large or small group.

Villa Santa Cruz is built on over 20 acres with plans to expand in the works but in a tasteful way that will continue to offer intimate privacy. A relaxed and casual atmosphere that can be used as a retreat or for weddings, with overflow accommodations in the area so you can use the Villa as the event center and bring larger groups. Breakfast is complimentary and was an event unto itself with coffee, fresh juice, bagels, cereals, and an amazing eggs Benedict. They rotate the menu so every morning brings a new option. We set up a late check out the next day and spent most of the morning bouncing between the second story palapa and the heated pool. Proprietors Matt and Jessica Canepa live on site in a separate home and are there for anything you need, obviously devoted to making your stay a wonderful experience. We were sad to pack up and actually drive away. Oakley our devoted mascot looked even sadder and had to be literally dragged back to the truck. Well every great stay comes to an end but the great news is we get to return.

Sierra de la Laguna

This impressive mountain range is part of the Peninsula Range that extends for over 930 miles and down into Baja CA Sur. The highest peak in the Peninsula Range is Mount San Jacinta in Riverside County at 10,834 ft.  The highest peak in the Sierra de la Laguna is 6,857 ft and overlooks the southern peninsula from La Paz to Cabo San Lucas. The name Sierra de la Laguna is in reference to the dry ancient lake beds that can be reached on an extended hike to the peak. From there the views are breath taking. The Sierra de la Laguna range is the dominate landmark in the area comprised of approximately 400 square miles of rugged mountain.

At the base you have a beautiful desert and dry arroyos for most of the year. Once you climb up you find trickles that form beautiful water falls, hot springs and a wide variety of flora and fauna including oasis of palms. Above 2600 ft the dryness gives way to pine-oak and Black Oak forest. Above 5200 ft you find Mexican Piñon.

The variety of ecosystems, endemic species and sub species are some of the reasons that make this range worth protecting. There are estimated to be 694 species of plants with 85 being endemic. The Mexican government designated the range as a Biosphere Reserve in 1994. UNESCO later called it “a highly important and contrasted ecosystem” that is an important source of water to the surrounding communities of Todos Santos, Los Barriles, Santiago, Miraflores, San Antonio, Pescadero, Las Cuevas and Buena Vista. The annual rainfall is just 25″ and mostly comes from summer storms and occasional winter rains. The majority of these communities raise cattle, making the case that we should continue with the reserve status and not bow to mining interests. These wealthy mining companies have unsuccessfully tried again and again to gain license to strip mine these glorious mountains for gold, silver and precious metals. If approved they would bring jobs but beware of the vast open pit that would become of this enterprise. They would use arsenic to separate the precious metals and contaminate the water supply that is in such short supply in our desert and semi arid environment.

The next time you fly into Los Cabos be sure to get a window seat. The eye is drawn to the incredible coast lines down both the Pacific and Gulf Coasts. Do not forget to gaze over our amazing mountain range that we love to explore, climb and discover. The next time you drive to La Paz from Cabo up highway 19 along the Pacific coast be sure to come back the other side of the loop down Highway 1 and the Sea of Cortez side. It takes a little longer but the “Loop” takes you completely around the Sierra de la Lagunas, you might just fall in love with the inland part of our paradise.

Todos Santos- Pueblo Magico, November ’17 Update

One of the top attractions on your stay in Los Cabos is a day trip or overnight to Todos Santos. Many find this nice little village their vacation destination and even the place to live full or part time. An hour north of Cabo San Lucas and an hour south of La Paz, Todos Santos is located right at the Tropic of Cancer. Whether you are looking for a great excursion or as an option to retire, here are some of the reasons why it is selected as a “Magic Town” and should be on your radar.

History

One of the first Missions was established in 1723. Mision Santa Rosa de las Palmas was the start to what became a thriving agriculture area for southern Baja. At the peak of the sugar cane era in the 19th century there were 6 major sugar mills and many farms sprung up during this period of prosperity. Most of the historic haciendas were built at this time. A major drought in the 1950’s drove most families out and eventually the last one closed in 1965.  These buildings and homes were left abandoned until artists and surfers discovered them and a small resurgence began. During the early 1980’s federal highway 19 was paved as an easier route from the ferries in La Paz to the booming tourist mecca in Cabo San Lucas. This brought tourism and hotels, restaurants and galleries to Todos Santos.

Community

Today the artist and surfing communities still thrive as well as many excellent boutique hotels, art galleries, haciendas and vacation rentals. Retiring people looking for a slower pace in a tropical but cooler desert climate have made the real estate community expand. The restaurant scene is impressive for such a small town with a wide array of options from street tacos to gourmet Italian with great varieties of international wines. The local vibe is easy to like as everyone is smiling and enjoying themselves. In addition to many art galleries, shops and hotels there are a few notable festivals. Festival de Cine and Todos Santos Music Festival are annual events. There is also the popular Todos Santos Historic Home Tour that is brought to you by The Palapa Society Organization each Spring.

Overall this is one of our favorite places for a get out of town week-end getaway. We can see why people are drawn to this area as an alternative to glitzy Los Cabos.  Plus if you are itching for some nightlife or need to make a Costco run, Cabo is an easy and beautiful drive along the Pacific where you are liable to see breaching whales during you trip. Driving north to do your shopping in La Paz is just as easy and there is even more variety. Plus the beaches in La Paz are legendary.

Here is a place where you can enjoy amazing weather, a real sense of small town community, surf and adventure and all one needs to enjoy being Todo Bien in Todos Santos.

Best Beaches of Los Cabos blog Videos

Medano Beach – Cabo San Lucas, MX Updated Fall

Los Cabos has a wide range of excellent beaches in which to choose. The northwest side on the Pacific coast offers rugged shoreline and impressive surf breaks, the East Cape is a world unto itself with miles of unexplored and unspoiled stretches of warm Gulf of California beaches. The corridor has the best of both with amazing villas, resorts and golf courses and the occasional bay with safe swimming options. The king of the tourist beaches is right in the heart of Cabo on a beach called Playa Medano. Ironically this busy beach has had the least change over the past 3 years. The area from the Marina to Club Cascadas is world famous for parties and water activities. It has great protection from the Land’s End peninsula and is a favorite for swimming, is easy for launching small pangas, larger para-sailing boats and jet skis. Dive boats and the new fly board boats start from here as well as the Marina. Kayak rentals and SUP venders are happy to get you started or bring your own. Best to begin your adventure early as these paddle sports are best enjoyed before the winds pick up and the drunken jet skiers become an issue.

Medano, a multi-use beach can get crowded especially during major Holidays but that is a draw if you like people watching. Speaking of people watching the famous Mango Deck keeps expanding and is by far the largest restaurant bar in Los Cabos with the reputation of adults on tequila behaving wildly. The Office On The Beach Restaurant and Bar is still giving great service and tasty food next door. Billigans Island, the New Cachet Beach Club, Omega Sports Bar and Restaurant, The Sand Bar, SUR Beach House and at the end of this row Tabasco Beach make up a nice selection of options for all ages. This is the happening place to be. Venders roam the beach with their knowing smiles and bargain deals mingling with the activity peddlers and timeshare tour operators to make this a fun and festive experience. After a few adult beverages and tasty tacos you may want to apply some more sunscreen or you may just wake up with a lobster complexion, dry tongue and a terrible brain burden. Don’t despair, The Office makes the best chicken chilaquiles and red beer so you can can beat the headache and start the day all over again. Then there are the various resorts that cropped up over the decades. Only a few new ones to report like the all-inclusive Breathless adjacent to the Marina and the new One Resort and Residences under construction next to Hacienda Beach Club Residences. As you venture eastward past Cascadas Resort the beach has a bigger surf break and is not as good for swimming or launching boats. The beach is still very nice to walk and or stumble back to the Villas Resorts and on to the Riu group further east. But not before you reach the arroyo between the resorts, that is where the tent city of massages and locals hang. This has easy parking and a wide assortment of venders. Recently annihilated after the tropical storm Lidia wreaked such havoc but nicely cleaned up by Locals and Gringos alike. Didn’t know such damage could come from a storm that was not a hurricane. Most of the tents and small venders shacks were wiped out but are already rebounding in time for high season. From there up the beach returns to quiet along a huge section of undeveloped beach front land tied up in court over ownership disputes. Wow what a dramatic change from the crazy party beach in Cabo San Lucas. This section has many local fishermen, rocky bluffs, alcoves and private little bays. We have walked the whole thing and it is further than it appears. If you are adventurous you can make it all the way to the end of the bay ending at the new Cape Hotel where the expert surfing beach called Monuments is located. As Cabo expands up the Pacific and around the east side up from San Jose Del Cabo, there will always be the ever happy and exuberant Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, the heart and soul of your Cabo Beach vacation.
