Top 5 Luxury Resorts

These are the amazing resorts in the luxury category. It was hard to stop at five as Cabo has a wide variety of great modern hotels and resorts. This list comprises of those that have consistently led by providing exceptional service, best locations and amenities aplenty.

The Cape a Thompson Hotel

Opened last year to critical acclaim, the Cape is on the far eastern side of Cabo Bay and adjacent to the Sunset Di Mona Lisa restaurant. The views through The Arch at Land’s End is amazing especially from their Rooftop Bar and Nightclub. There are rooms and stunning suites and huge villas with their own rooftop lounges. The Cape has two pools and outdoor spa cabanas along with casual dining and open air lounges. This is the most modern of Cabo designs and attracts the younger, fitter crowd that enjoy live music and DJ’s on the weekends. They draw the local crowd as well as tourists with their amazing rooftop terrace, lounge and bar. The advanced surf break Monuments is directly in front but beware swimming here. Well known interior architect Marisabel Gomez has his signature on this modern yet casual, comfortable styled hotel. Rack rates range from $465 to $2275 plus tax peak season.

Grand Solmar at Land’s End

Opened in 2010 and finished in 2016 the Grand Solmar at Land’s End replaced the original boutique Solmar, one of the original hotels in Cabo built before statehood and just prior to the highway 1 completion. The location is the ‘last resort’ as it is the most southern of all hotels. The Bulnes family really outdid themselves with this ocean’s edge property. There is no resort closer to the ocean and their 6 pools all have dramatic views. Many of their suites are practically right over the water and range from a spacious 700 sq ft suite to the 6200 sq ft 4 bedroom Penthouses. Plenty of swim up pool bars, a sports bar and 5 restaurants make up this award winning resort at the end of the road. Throw in the Sea Spa, a huge fitness center and whale watching from every suite and you have a winning formula. Rates starting at $475 plus tax.

The Hacienda Beach Club and Residences

Formerly the Hotel Camino Real built in 1964. This condo hotel and villa resort has an enviable location originally next to the private air strip that was later turned into the Cabo Marina. Surprisingly quiet on the busiest of all beaches, Playa Medano. It has a relaxed atmosphere and a short walk to world class nightlife and restaurants. Even on Holiday weeks the resort is never full as these are second and third homes to the residents some of which rent them out through their management company. So if you are looking for exclusive, well-appointed, center of it all location with wonderful beach club, bars and Oceanside Restaurant give this a try for a stay or purchase one for yourself.  From two bedroom ocean view condos starting at $1400 plus tax to four bedroom ocean front villas starting at $4450 plus tax.

Villa La Estancia Resort and Spa

Located on the eastern side of Medano Beach lies the Villas Group of resorts. The three resorts share what feels like a world unto themselves with spas, restaurants, grocery store, shopping and a great beach front location. In the middle lies their top private residence club, Villa la Estancia. This Spanish Colonial inspired architecture has 156 units in a mix of two, three and huge four bedroom penthouses that are full ownership, quarter share and 4 week ownerships with titles. They have their condo hotel rental program for those owners wishing to rent out unused time. Built in 2004 for the higher end client that wanted larger residence style resort vacations. This has been a trend in the industry as families like to have the comforts of a second home and the 5 star amenities of a high end hotel. Each villa has large living rooms, dining and full kitchens and well appointed balconies with views of Cabo Bay and Land’s End in the distance.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach at Quivira

If you like expansive mega resorts with tons of amenities, pools and restaurants with stunning views you will love Sunset Beach. This has been a work in progress for the past 16 years and you always have something new to experience as they keep adding amenities, beach clubs, golf, and new restaurants. They are also well on their way with full ownership home options in a wide range of prices. Their Quivira golf course is a Jack Nicklaus stunner with cliff side holes wrapping around the southern most tip of the Baja peninsula. The course has been called ‘The Pebble Beach of Mexico’ and is a joy to play. Being semi-private you have to stay on property to play the course. Plans for a private 2nd course and expanding the resort are underway. They have optional all inclusive plans and kitchens in all units. The sky pool is the highest pool and an excellent place to sip a cold beverage, catch some sun and relax while whale watching. The classic Mexican design even has a beautiful chapel designed in typical Hacienda tradition. They have three, four and five bedroom residences with private pools high up on the cliffs and close to the beach. When you pull into the gate the road to the resort is still another mile as this 1800 acre property is immense. The views on the ride in is simply magical and distracting so keep your eyes on the road or your rental insurance policy may need to be used. All in all this mega project has matured well and will delight even the most well traveled guests.

The Top Five Ultra Luxury Resorts

When only the best will suffice. Any one of these will overwhelm the senses and leave nothing to chance.

1. The Resort at Pedregal – formerly Capella Cabo

On quiet Solmar Beach but close to downtown Cabo this 24 acres of pure bliss has been on most lists as one of top in the world. For good reason as this product is for those who require the best of all things a resort can possibly offer. Residential style casitas sit so close to the pounding surf that you may have to close the doors the first night until you get used to the rumble. All the requisite offerings are waiting once you pass through the chandelier lit tunnel.

2. The One and Only Palmilla – formerly the Palmilla

While this standard bearer is the grand dame of top shelf and one of the first built in Los Cabos, the service levels have never wavered.

A modest 15 rooms when she opened in 1956, a major $90 million renovation just in time for John Travolta’s 50th birthday celebration in 2004 and rebirths as The One and Only Palmilla with 115 residences. Celebrities have always flocked here since the earliest opening. The first golf course in Los Cabos opened in 1991, a 27 hole masterpiece by Jack Nicklaus rounds out the impeccable offerings of this best in class resort at the point of Palmilla. Casitas and villas up to 10,000 sq ft are offered and the restaurants, bars, spa and overall amenities make this an exceptional experience.

3. Las Ventanas al Paraiso – A Rosewood Resort

The margin of awesome is too close to call with these top 5 but if you are looking to spend the most per night then you can do it in billionaire style in the Ty Warner Villa at a mere $35,000 a night (plus tax but who’s counting). You don’t have to have that level of disposable to get a good nights rest here as many of the residences are condo hotels that you can purchase outright. A recent expansion after the last expansion in 2010 goes to show that they are attracting plenty of guests and returning lucky travelers that are hooked on the Windows of Paradise.

4. Esperanza – An Auberge Resort

Named one of the top Resort brands in the world in 2017 Conde Nast Traveler, this is Auberge’s proud Mexican offering. Three projects in one with top spa make this colorful cliff side retreat another memorable offering. What makes their original Napa Resort Calistoga Ranch special has been transported to this unique retreat at Punta Ballena. An aptly named Whales Point due to the daily sightings during the winter season. Well appointed suites, two and three bedroom villas and large oceanfront homes gives the traveler plenty of grand options. Esperanza translates to Hope but rest assured you will not have to hope, you are guaranteed an amazing stay.

5. Chileno Bay Resort and Residences – An Auberge Resort

Recently opened this year with phase two soon to be completed. Another impeccable ultra luxurious resort named Chileno Bay Resort and Residences rounds out the top 5. The coveted location along the Chileno Bay reef with its protected swimming beach gives this a special beach resort feeling. Whether you want to paddle board, snorkel, sail, make sand castles or just relax under the shade you are sure to find your inner happiness. Add in full ownership options, amazing pools, spa, restaurants and bars plus the recently opened Tom Fazio private golf course there is plenty to brag about. Managed by The Discovery Land Company the developers of El Dorado, the gold standard for exclusive members only residences. Owner Mike Meldman along with Rande Gerber and George Clooney are the friends behind Casamigos Tequila.

Los Cabos was always a special place that was first frequented by the rich and famous. It would have to be due to the difficulty of location along with the sea and desert beauty. Getting here was by private plane or large yacht. Before there was a ferry, a commercial airport or even a road there were high end fishing resorts. The spirit of high end service remains and these five world class resorts keep the luxury flame burning. While the luxury resorts community is exploding with new projects, these five have iconic locations and will be hard to beat.

Cerritos Surf Town

For a tranquil get away on the cooler Pacific side of Los Cabos come to Cerrito’s surf beach just 40 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. One of our favorite spots, Cerritos Surf Town offers an assortment of studio, one and two bedroom Casitas right on the beach. A huge pool, swim up pool bar and restaurant serves Mexican and seafood dishes. From delicious omelettes, burgers, fresh ceviches and seafood creations the chefs consistently delight the palate. A great day destination to hang poolside on comfortable giant lounge beds. Hit the surf shack in front for your board rental and surf lesson. New owners purchased the property in 2016 with big plans on renovations and future expansions, therefore the new name Cerrito’s Surf Town. Casitas are in need of maintenance and kitchens need to be more functionally equipped but memorable nights and days can be spent here now.

Stay tuned for future updates from Cabo’s finest on Cerritos Surf Town and more.

Driving the Baja part 2 Guerrero Negro to Cabo

Here we go continuing on our epic road trip down the Baja. This section is my personal favorite as you cross over the state border in Guerrero Negro onward to Cabo. The first leg is across from the Pacific to the Sea of Cortez. This is the first glimpse of the Sea unless you took the side trip to Bahia Los Angeles. Good idea to gas up and have all your supplies in Guerrero Negro. This first section is pretty desolate as you head due east. There is the oasis town of San Ignacio 92 miles away and this is another chance to take a side trip south to the surf Mecca of Scorpion Bay. Not to be taken lightly as this is a primitive road that takes about 3 hours to cover 105 miles. Mision San Ignacio is the center of this small farming community of just over 600 inhabitants.

Heading east toward Santa Rosalia you will have a fairly big climb and a steep descent that will challenge your brakes. For those towing a trailer be sure to take another look at your rig before descending this section. In the distance you will see the volcanoes to the north. There are 11 volcanoes in the Baja and 4 of them are visible just before you see the Sea. The first is La Reforma Caldera and then the aptly named Tres Virgenes.  There is some Eco tourism here but it is rarely visited. Down and down you go, along a winding mountain road you see the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez and the mining town of Santa Rosalia at the bottom. You have made it across and the next few hours are magic.

Santa Rosalia was once a major copper mining company town developed by the French group El Boleo. Rumor has it that Iglesias de Santa Barbara was designed by Gustave Eiffel.  Makes sense since he loved his metal architecture and this is a metal church. There is also a ferry to mainland for transporting supplies back and forth with mainland. The town itself is not so scenic as the old mining equipment, locomotives and decaying furnace are all rusting and rotting right in town. Not much tourism here as the snowbirds have much prettier options just to the south. Another chance for gas and supplies here before you head another hour to Mulege.

While we all call it Mulege the official name if Heroica Mulege. Due to the Mexican American War of 1884 when there were a few incidents won by the locals. This oasis has a prominent river Rio Santa Rosalia and has Mision Santa Rosalia. It is a wonder that it isn’t named that instead of it’s northern neighbor. Here tourism is a major draw for diving, fishing and snowbirds living along the river or on the beautiful beaches with great access. This river and palm oasis is an exception to the harsh desert environment and has been inhabited for thousands of years. There are numerous cave paintings to explore. Be prepared to be impressed for the next couple of hours as you will be driving along side the beautiful Bahia Concepcion.

A favorite for snowbirds and with caravans of RV enthusiasts, the Bahia Concepcion is the very essence of the Baja. Your first time should be a slow endeavor, a week of beach camping is a good start. If you are going to pass by do it with a steady slowness. Bahia Concepcion is one of the largest Bays in Baja and has over 50 miles of sandy beaches. There are great camping options with the most popular being Playa Santispac, Playa Coyote, Playa Cocos and Los Naranjas. The warm protected bay dotted with islands and plenty of sunshine and mangrove inlets make this a bahia to remember. But we must push further south as we make our way along the blue waters of the Sea of Cortez to your left and striped copper colors of the Sierra de la Gigantas to your right. The 90 mile stretch from Mulege to Loreto is 2 hours of road trip bliss. We like to stay in Mulege when going south so we can enjoy the sunrise over the water and the warm colors.

A short blast south and you are pulling into Loreto. I don’t want to kill your idea of making good time but this is a must stop over town with rich history. This is where one of the first missions in the Americas was established going back to 1697 by the Jesuits from Spain. The locals had enough of their strong armed ways and kicked them out in 1767, but they re-grouped as the Franciscans a few years later. The Jesuits went north to what is now Monterey, CA. There are seven significant buildings dating back many centuries with the grandest dame of the bunch being Mision de Nuestra Senora de Loreto Concha. Being mindful of not rambling we will have to dig further at a later date as we must keep heading south. The next twenty miles will have you spell bound as the Sierra de la Gigantas will start their color transformation as the sun fades west. The recurring start, stop, start development of Loreto Bay beckons but darn it all we got waylaid and the sun is sinking and we gotta make time. Will need a whole new article to even begin to describe Puerto Escondido and the amazing Islands of Loreto Resort that you must re-visit. Once you make an obvious western turn and start heading uphill into the Giganta Range you have the hill climb and s-turn road ahead into the next farming community. Ciudad Insurgentes is where you slow down and gas up. Just a short distance is the sister town of Ciudad Constitucion and another side trip option (don’t you just love options?) of yet another whale watching area Bahia de Magdelena. Mag Bay is best explored from San Carlos and is merely 40 miles west. But you are trying to make it to La Paz for good reason so we keep going down Highway 1.

Loreto to La Paz is 220 miles and about 4 hours as the road is well maintained. This is another possible stopping point. There are numerous hotels and full blown resorts with golf and marinas attached so you certainly have great options. La Paz is the city of Peace and there are many mysteries to explore. One of the wonders is the long board walk along the bay that is the heart of this capital city of BCS. Fast growth and retail chains have mushroomed as this is a prosperous town but the idyllic feel of a small town on the bay remains. One of the leading Eco-tourism destinations of the world is here. No wonder the nearby Cerralvo Island was recently renamed Isla Cousteau as this is a great starting point for the ‘World’s Aquarium’. As we reluctantly head out of Peace-town we try to console ourselves with dreams of Cabo so close by. But first we must decide if we are to continue along Highway 1 or take the easier, more direct route Highway 19 through Todos Santos. Yes we have choices but darn if both aren’t lovely options. In light of my rambling prose and your modern tendency for boredom we will choose the faster Pacific side.

A short hour south you will roll into another ‘Pueblo Magico’ town called Todos Santos. This was a successful farming community that had its glory years back when sugar was expensive and the Haciendas were flourishing. After a major drought, the locals moved out and the artists moved in and to this day there is a large artist community. This is also growing with new developments, some great boutique hotels and impressive restaurants. Just south is the surfing towns of Pescadero and Cerritos. Then it is only 40 more miles until you pull into the world famous Cabo San Lucas and Land’s End.

We will continue to cover this area in depth in our local insider’s guide at www.cabosfinest.com.

Driving the Baja Part 1- the Top Half

We have enjoyed traveling into and currently living as a permanent resident in our lovely neighbor to the south for many years now. What started as a year or two test has grown into a full fledged love affair going on our 15th season of year-round residency. Before you make this wise decision to live and love in Mexico, you owe it to yourself to drive down at least once or thrice to get a good feel for the territory. This most memorable road trip will stick in your gourd with tales of fun and adventure and is highly recommended at least once.

The experience of exploring down Federal Highway 1 is best planned with a few back up options and plenty of time to wander. We have always loved a grand road trip and this is one of the world’s greatest drives. Most of us that have made this epic drive have first visited delightful Mexico by jet or cruise ship. Driving down however is a very contrasting experience. If you’ve only tried Mexico by way of a glitzy all inclusive resort or cruise ship, your first trip by vehicle will make you a little white knuckled on the wheel and a ton twitchy when you approach your first military check point. There you are, cold beverage in hand, music blaring and your Labrador drooling on your shoulder as he wags his whole body hoping to meet a new friend. Only these are teenagers with semi automatics and no smiles. You hadn’t expected to make that turn and find these camouflaged mannish boys staring you down. Wow that first unexpected check point is certainly the worst. But don’t worry once you realize they are only looking for obvious guns and drugs and not your sweating Pacifico you swallow the lump and keep heading south. South by southeast, down and then down some more into the majestic Baja. Believe me when I tell you these check points are harmless inconveniences that you will barely notice. Carry some extra cold colas and (for some reason) bumper stickers or baseball hats and the serious looks become flowing smiles as they wave you through.  Tough work for these misplaced military boys in the hot boring desert.  Plus they are keeping the place safe and are there to help. Speaking of help you will notice these nice green and white work trucks that appear to be there as Baja race support teams. They are in fact the Angeles Verdes or Green Angels that are mechanics that drive up and down highway 1 offering roadside assistance.

But I get ahead of myself as I often do – first off you must cross the border or worse yet if you are starting from Tahoe you have to get through the rugged and dangerous Los Angeles. No getting around it and be sure to keep your hands away from your horn. You never know when you might just anger the wrong stressed-out, over worked, recently divorced with massive child support paying, southern Cali resident.  Best to go slow and keep an eye on your speed as the ever present CHP officer makes that recent divorcee seem quaint in comparison. But you make it through unscathed and see the delightful San Diego Bay and realize the best part the trip is still ahead.

We normally make our first overnight in San Diego before we cross the border. Here we can enjoy a nice meal and some rest before we cross over. I’ve had friends boast they’ve made the whole Baja trip in 18 hours but that is unlikely and rather foolish considering the condition of the road and the Diablo truck drivers who own the whole road, both sides after dark. Not to mention the cows, donkeys and herds of goats that like the warmth of the road once the darkness and cold envelops the desert. We prefer starting early and getting off the road at cocktail hour. We prefer three days of 7 to 8 hours a day driving or we as we like to call it, exploring the Baja.

2 Day Route

Day 1- From the border to Guerrero Negro – 447 miles approximately 10 hours

Day 2 – Guerrero Negro to Cabo San Lucas – 576 miles approximately 9 1/2 hours

3 Day Route

Day 1 – From the border to Cataviña – 298 miles approximately 7 hours

Day 2 – Cataviña to Loreto – 402 miles approximately 7 hours

Day 3 – Loreto to Cabo San Lucas – 318 miles approximately 6 hours

Once you’ve secured your Mexican auto insurance, filled out your tourist card at the border (or wait ’til you get to the state crossing in Guerrero Negro, but a possible problem as they are consistently inconsistent). You are nearly ready. Get that vehicle tuned up, check your tread and fill your cooler. Then and only when you have all checks on your gotta have list, you are ready to roll down the great not so barren amusement park called Baja.

Tijuana to Guerrero Negro –

Ok I will not take the time to get into the wonderful and chaotic adventure ride called TJ. The sixth largest city in Mexico with over 1.7 million people it is a wonder unto itself. Let’s just keep moving into the right lane so we don’t miss the toll road. This occasionally closed cliff side wonder of engineering madness is delightful and scenic and only a few pesos later you will be looking over the crashing waves, happy surfers and heading toward Ensenada. Here you are thinking, wow we are making great time, then comes the grinding halt of the no bypass route through this pretty seaside city but mess of a route. At least it’s lunch time and the choices are grand. Might as well top off the gas and the ice in the cooler and keep on trucking. Ensenada the ‘Cinderella of the Pacific’ was one of the first settlements in the California’s. Don’t forget that California was Mexico up until 1848.

South from here is major agriculture country and so many stop lights your good time ride crawls to a slow cruise as you enjoy the flowing fields of strawberries and the flat bed trucks full of workers heading out to work. A few hours later you head into San Quintin and the fields of farms slow up which turns back into cactus and nothingness. Here is where the Baja turns into untarnished wildness and the adventure begins as the population drops.

Be sure to keep a watchful if not paranoid eye on your gas gauge. There are plenty of stations in the northern section but once you get to El Rosario fill er up even if you are nearly full. El Rosario is your last chance for lobster burritos, beer, gas and ice. Best place for all four is at the turn called Mama Espinoza Restarante. This could also be a small Baja 1000 museum as well as a tasty real Mexican stop off. The next stop is an hour and a half in the lunar landscape of Cataviña. This is when you should play ‘Dark Side of the Moon’. You can go an hour or more and not set sight on another human. A few dead cows later you see a Casa in the wash of an old deserted RV park and wonder, ‘how the hell does that hombre make it out here’? Not to fret as this reoccurring question never becomes clear. This is Mexico and these people work to live and are ready to give you the shirt off their back once they see that you respect their existence and return their smiles. Since they don’t have a mortgage, car payment nor college expense worries, you see why that gentle smile is easy, long and natural.

From Cataviña you will have open road and not much else until the split where you can head East to Bahia Los Angeles. This is 65 miles from Cataviña and you have only 84 more miles ’til cocktail hour in Guerrero Negro. This section of the road is mostly inland and the terrain goes from crazy lunar rocky and mountainous to wide open and dry desert.  Keep an eye out for some amazing desert plants that are endemic to Baja like the Cardon Cactus also known as Giant Elephant Cactus. The Pitahaya Dolce has an edible and sweet fruit that is a delicacy and the ‘what the Hell’? Boojum Tree that is straight out of a Dr Seuss book. Further along you eventually get back to the west side and see the mighty Pacific in the distance. This is your indicator that you are getting closer to your stopping off point where Baja ends and Baja California Sur begins. Another military check point at the state crossing with its unusually large Mexican flag flying and then you are ready for that cold margarita and a great nights rest in Guerrero Negro. You are now officially in the newest state in Mexico, BCS Baja California Sur, or Lower California South. The state was established one year after the completion of the Highway 1 pavement project in 1973 and what a wonderful addition to a magnificent country.

This bayside town Guerrero Negro has 13,000 happy locals and is known for two opposing interests, salt and whales. Salt from the flats that is one of the largest producers in the world and then the migratory whales that head here by the thousands in the winter months. So the salt industry and Whale Eco Tourism is the main draw with friendly locals enjoying both. Cheap and clean hotels dot the main and only road that is to your right plus some decent food and plenty of shopping to reload your cooler. It is time to top off the gas again as well. Now we are ready to tackle the lower section and in many ways the best part of this thousand mile odyssey.

Part Two will focus on the second half of this amazing road.

Stay tuned next week!

La Bohemia Baja – Hotel Pequeño

If you are a traveler looking for a boutique hotel with soul in Todos Santos then you must begin your adventure in the perfect base camp called La Bohemia Baja. This 8 casita Hotel Pequeño is only small in the number of rooms. From the first step through their arched doorway you will experience a relaxing stay. The staff and proprietors are all working in harmony to make sure your vacations dreams are realized at a moderate price. From the high quality toiletries to the comfort of their beds and bedding, you can rest soundly knowing they have you covered. If adventure is your calling they have loads of options from horseback riding to cave painting viewing to custom motorcycling tours. How about an early morning visit to a local ranch and try your hand at milking a cow? Indulge after with a fresh hot cappuccino. Need a massage after your adventure, just let them know and it will be waiting for you. You may opt to forego the activities and just CHILLAX in the comfortable outdoor areas poolside or under the shaded palapa. An added bonus is the guest usage of the beach front El Faro Beach club just a short drive away. But before you decide fast or slow you must start the day off right with a hearty Mexican Desayuno and bottomless coffee. Their breakfast is so tasty that they have many locals that stop by for the delicacies. THE best mole I’ve ever had is a special served with eggs on some lucky days, every day there’s a different special.

The owners Erin and Andy are both world travelers and know what you need to make your Todos Santos stay a perfect blend of fun and chill. The Hotel was completely renovated and renamed La Bohemia Baja in 2014 after being the very first Bed & Breakfast known as Las Casitas. Their 100+ year old Adobe casitas have a warmth and feel that has been updated with cozy beds and tastefully decorated. Their heart and soul is obviously on display as you can see the attention to detail and happy staff.

There are fancier places to choose in the area but if you are inclined to unique boutique with caring owners and a great knowledge of the area you can’t go wrong with this Hotel Pequeno.

Boca de la Sierra – Miraflores Los Cabos

Once you have been to the wonderful Baja beaches, you have to expand your realm of exploration into the Sierra de la Lagunas mountians. The Fall is an especially excellent time after the late summer rains. It is then that the cool fresh mountain streams cascade from each of the many canyons on all sides of this impressive mountain range.  In this article we will feature the wonderful Boca de la Sierra (Mouth of the Mountains) area just outside of the cute village of Miraflores with means, Look, Flowers!

An hour north of Cabo and 20 minutes north of the San Jose Airport you make your left off Federal Highway 1 at Miraflores. After a few miles you head through this mostly agriculture and cattle town past the church and head a little further north until you see a playground. This is your indicator to scout for the parking area and a clear sign for Boca de la Sierra. The first 50 yards you are wondering whose house you are trespassing by but just keep walking, between the first and second home is a well worn path leading downhill. There is a small open gate made of drift wood and the small river flowing in the valley below. This is your trail to this mountainous playground.

This used to be an fairly hidden jewel but has become very popular with locals and tourists alike. The addition of Cabo Adventures, Outdoor Zip Line Adventure has increased the exposure and the number of people enjoying this area. So don’t be surprised when you are swimming in one of the numerous pools when you first hear a screaming tourist zipping overhead. Fun is being had by all and you can swim up stream to get away from the crowds that mostly stay closer to the parking area. There are numerous pools that cascade down the mountain, the further up you go the quieter it becomes.

We like to bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it all. There are a few authentic family owned restaurants in the area as well. This is a dog friendly swimming area so we always take Oakley. Our followers wouldn’t want it any other way. You can book a tour and have them take care of the details or rent a vehicle and discover it on your own pace.

From the Starwood Group comes the much anticipated hotel, spa and tennis academy right in the middle of Los Cabos. The modern design is a combination of stacked blocks and nature. With grass roofs, tunnels and lots of greenery and impressive pools this is looking like a winning style and very different for our market.

Opening March 2018

Solaz Residence Club

From the owners of Hacienda Del Mar comes an impressive residence club adjoining the Luxury Collection Hotel. Bringing condo hotel sensibility to an eco friendly, low impact design and focusing on natural design elements.

Opening Winter 2018.

Villa la Valencia

A 260 villa project from the Villa Group. Striving for the highest level and a welcome addition to their collection. Facilities will include a reef-inspired pool, a lazy river with margarita stands along the way, four restaurants, gym and spa.

Opening late 2019

Hotel Garza Blanca Resort and Spa

This is another 5 star luxury resort right in the Corridor. You have seen it being built between the newly opened Grand Velas and the huge new Solaz. This will be an all inclusive optional. We prefer our resorts non-all inclusive in safe to explore areas like Los Cabos. At least they have the option to stay and have everything included or pay as you go. Your local restaurants will be happy. From the popular Garza Blanca Resort and Preserve and Hotel Mousai both in Puerto Vallarta comes this excellent new addition.

Opening 2018.

Grand Velas Los Cabos

In the race to be the first to open of the 4 resorts that are clustered together just past the El Tule bridge in the Corridor they won, and did they ever build this new wonderful resort in quick fashion. This developer has 4 other properties and rumor has it they will be opening a timeshare division next year. Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, Velas Vallarta and Casa Velas are their other offerings. This new high end all inclusive resort is priced for the luxury traveler and their accommodations, restaurant choices, spa and meeting areas are indeed impressive. Recently opened and receiving glowing reviews. They even have a Michelin 2-star restaurant called Cocina de Autor. Even though they are mandatory all inclusive their restaurants are open to all which is unusual.

Chileno Bay Resort & Residences

Combining the luxury condo hotel experience with full ownership option plus the beach club and golf course combo, this is yet another amazing option for those with the budget to impress. The masterplan at Chileno Bay is now being managed by Discovery Land Company, the developers of the ‘gold standard’ El Dorado project. This is the second project from Auberge following the very successful Esperanza by Auberge. They opened this year and recently completed phase 2 with limited inventory remaining.

Montage Los Cabos

From the Montage Beverley Hills and the O’Hana Group comes a much anticipated mega project on the iconic Bahia Santa Maria. This is three projects in one with ultra posh Maravilla on the old Twin Dolphins Hotel site, the Montage Los Cabos Hotel along Santa Maria Beach and the Montage Residences overlooking the hotel. They have been masterminding and massaging this amazing location for over 14 years.

Opening 2018.

Park Hyatt Los Cabos

Located within Cabo Del Sol comes the newly announce Park Hyatt. This is one of two major Park Hyatt projects announced at the end of Sept of this year, the second is in Mexico City. This beach front project is between Fiesta Americana and The Sheraton Hacienda del Mar. The original lot was going to be the Ritz Carlton and then sat undeveloped for over 10 years. When Cabo Del Sol’s ocean course was changed to make more ocean front for a project our suspicions that something was happening were aroused. This should be a welcome addition to the masterplan of Cabo del Sol.

Pacific Developments

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Two

When Ernesto Coppel announced his land purchase on the Pacific side back in 2001 most felt that would be a huge mistake. This massive parcel of land on the true southern tip seemed inaccessible and too far from Cabo. Boy were we all wrong. Quivira has become a destination unto itself. With the incredible Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica and the newly open The Towers at Pacifica this resort juggernaut now has 5 resorts in Cabo San Lucas and a sixth being planned. Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Two will be between Pacifica and Sunset Beach and a welcome addition to their collection. The wide range of ocean view full ownership options definitely compliment this golf course community. Future ocean front villas are also available.

St Regis Los Cabos

St Regis just announced plans to join Quivira at Cabo Falso. 120 high end villas and 60 residences are planned. This is a major addition to the impressive Quivira master plan. The St. Regis will be located on the west side of Sunset Beach and just below the cliff side holes of Quivira Golf Course recently named the Pebble Beach of Mexico. Plans to build a second course to compliment their cliff side master piece is also included in the masterplan.

Opening late 2020.

Nobu Resorts

Joining the Diamante project Nobu Hotels enters into new territory in Mexico. Banking on the Asian market in an area not typically on that radar. This comes as welcome news to all developers in Los Cabos.  Japanese meets contemporary beach design. Nobu restaurants and Robert Di Nero join forces to bring us an Asian Luxury Option in Cabo.

Opening 2018

Hard Rock Resort and Casino

Also joining the Diamante Group is the massive new Hard Rock Resort and Casino. This 600 room hotel and convention center will have a multitude of services. This is the fourth Mexican resort and brings with it a new level for music lovers and those looking for a fun and rocking vacation with six restaurants, massive pools and vibe. Construction is moving at an impressive rate, this this will be a mega resort.

Opening late 2018.

Rancho San Lucas – two resorts are now being built.

Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas and the Private Residences at Rancho San Lucas. The newest massive multi use mega resorts on over 800 acres is under construction from the Solmar Group. This everything in one destination property has it all: golf, tennis, resort, river, lagoon, wave pool, villa, mega mansions and everything but winter sports.  Co-developed with the Greg Norman Group.

Opening Jan 2018

And further up north

Tres Santos

Tres Santos offers beach, farm and hillside options. With two distinct villages and a close proximity to Todos Santos, this new development gives those Pacific lovers yet another great option.

In addition to these 18 massive projects many smaller boutiques are also sprouting up making 2017-2019 a period of unprecedented growth. If you miss the slow pace of the old days in Cabo just relax and drive a few more minutes away from the tip and you have hundreds of miles of unspoiled Baja treasures.

We are concerned that Cabo can not absorb so many new hotel rooms, fractional residences and luxury residences when we have such a big supply in the first place. We are reconsidering our concern now that the Caribbean has been so horribly disfigured. We hope our friends there can rebuild and be stronger as we experienced after hurricane Odile in 2014. The boost we received after the hurricane Wilma decimated Cancun in 2005 was substantial. Thousands of tourists that usually went to the Riviera Maya gave Cabo a try, loved us and keep returning. Just look at all the new non-stop flights out of the east coast. Perhaps we will get another boost with the current situation in Florida and the Caribbean. Now if we could only get these deep pocketed developers to build some low cost housing, improve our water supplies and overall infrastructure.
